Dave Norman

It is with great sadness to inform members of Devon Birds and friends of Dave that he died suddenly yesterday. Dave was a great friend, mentor for many and supporter of the society and will be hugely missed. Our thoughts of course go out to his wife Karen and daughter Emma.

Plymouth Branch Field Trip to South Devon on 10 Jan

Posted January 12th, 2015 at 8:21 pm by George & Julia Harris

A group of nine Devon Bird members found themselves defying the elements at Brixham Breakwater on a fresh but clear Saturday morning. Three Purple Sandpiper had tucked themselves into the lea of the breakwater whilst we fought the keen wind and squalls.  Two Guillemots sheltered amongst the moored yachts.   Both Shag and Cormorant dried themselves on the pontoons, while Turnstone were scampering near the feet of passersby on the quay.   Far out to sea the white of the Gannets transected the white capped waves as they dived for sprats.

A visit to the local restaurant allowed us to avoid the remaining showers as the wind softened.  Some of the group moved onto Broadsands where Cirl Bunting fed near the beach huts of the second car park.  A Yellow-browed Warbler was identified by a patient few whilst two Velvet Scoter, a Great Crested Grebe and a Great Northern Diver were spotted out to sea.

Honour for Dave Jenks

Posted January 8th, 2015 at 4:28 pm by George & Julia Harris

Dave Jenks the Society’s former Archivist has been honoured with life membership by the BTO for his loyal support to the Trust over many years. This came about after Dave had to reluctantly give up bird ringing due to ill health.

Members will recollect that Dave carried out most of his bird ringing in his garden in Torquay and had written several papers on his activities in Devon Birds, especially on wintering Blackcaps. This is just one of 14 articles Dave has written for Devon Birds Journal.

With this honour and that bestowed on him by the Society of honorary membership Dave I am sure will be very proud of his ornithological achievements. The Society warmly congratulates him on achieving this new honour.

Dave have also written the book "A History of Devonshire Ornithology"   Available in our Shop – a review of the literature, events and personalities of Devonshire ornithology from prehistoric times to the twentieth century
