An interesting trip to Eggesford Forest on Tues 1 April

The Mid-Devon Branch met at Eggesford Forest on Tuesday 1st April and the early morning mist was soon burnt off by warm sunshine. Setting off from the car park the group walked up through Hilltown Wood and out into the open areas of countryside.

Yellowhammer Tom Wallis Eggesford Forest 1.4.2014

We were treated to wonderful views of a pair of yellowhammers on the hedgerow, photo courtesy of Tom Wallis.  Coming back through the valley towards the woods we saw a jackdaw fly from the hole in a big old oak tree. After lunch in the picnic area by the car park we walked the eastern circular track through the forest.  In all we spotted/heard approximately 32 different species of birds including goldcrest, treecreeper, songthrush, chiffchaff, blackcap, stock dove, siskin, sparrowhawk and raven etc.

The next Mid-Devon meeting will be the Hatherleigh Ruby Trail on 17 April - Meet at Market Car Park (not in town car park) SS538045.  All welcome - look forward to seeing you there.          Annabelle Strickland
