Sunday 18th September 2022

Heanton Court to Wrafton Pond

A morning walk from Heanton Court where there were a few House Sparrows, a few Redshank and Greenshank seen nearby and on to Wrafton pond where there were a few Black tailed Godwit and a single Spotted Redshank were seen on the Scrape.

Choughs at Gammon Head

A great joy to see and hear choughs in Devonl. Three seen this afternoon, just east of Gammon Head above Eleander cove.

Crownhill Down

Very quiet late afternoon on the Down. A GWP and a couple of Spotted Flycatchers seen on the way back along the bridlepath.                              A solitary Dipper seen in the dying light on the Tory Brook near Loughtor Mill.

Aylesbeare Common


Plenty of Dartford Warbler; Kestrel; Chiffchaff; Nuthatch: Raven; Stonechat; Blackcap (2 female); Goldcrest and Coal Tit amongst other species.

Wrafton pond and scrape

A mid morning visit was rewarded with close views of a juvenile Spotted Redshank (thank you Jon Turner for confirming our suspicion) feeding with three Black Tailed Godwit in the small scrape. A further 20 or so BTG's in the main scrape. Mallard and <50 BHG's on the pond.

Even more Black-headed Gulls on Wrafton Pond this morning - 200? Out on the scrape 26 Black-tailed Godwits and the Spotted Redshank still. Probably 3 calling Cetti's Warblers in the reserve, and both Grey Wagtail and Kingfisher in the river.

Exminster Marsh & Turf Hotel

Lunch time visit to Exminster Marsh and Turf Hotel. Osprey feeding south of Lympstone. 35+ Sandwich Tern on estuary. 2 Cattle Egret south of Lagoon was best of visit.

The highlights from a late morning walk from Velator to Horsey Island - ringed plover, dunlin, buzzard, kestrel, little owl, mute swan, moorhen, cormorant, Canada geese, little grebe, goldfinch, a lone swallow, linnet, wheatear.

Wrafton pond and scrape

After a few days away took the bike down to check the scrape. About 40 Godwits, and the Spotted Redshank still present. About 140 Black-headed Gulls on Wrafton Pond.

East Soar

Wryneck still by ponds (re.Ritchie Moore) plus 5 Spotted Flycatcher, 41 Chiffchaff, 14 Blackcap, Green Woodepecker, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 40 Meadow Pipit, 3 Grey Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, 50 Swallow, 20 House Martin, 20 Stonechat, Sedge Warbler, 3 Whitethroat, Sparrowhawk, 2 Wheatear, 48 Robin and a possible influx of 19 Wren - not sure they move much!

Non-avian: 5 Clouded Yellow, 21 Red Admiral & 3 Hornet Robber Fly.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

A good selection of waders on Blaxton Meadow this morning including: 3 Knots (2 juvs + ad), 12 Bar-tailed Godwits, 13 Greenshanks, 2 Common Sandpipers, 11 Dunlins & 23 Oystercatchers.

Also, Kingfisher, Green Woodpecker, Whinchat, 3+ Stonechats, Grey Wagtail, Sparrowhawk & a Small Heath.

Osprey - Brixham

Friday 16th Sept. Sat in the garden at 10.30AM, in Brixham, and an Osprey flew over, heading north east.  Later the same day, on the steam train at Staverton, another Osprey, flying down river towards Totnes.

Around Bideford

Wednesday 14th, Instow. 1 Med Gull, 4 Wheatear 1 Greenfinch. Fremington Quay at low tide. 1 Glossy Ibis,1 Bar tailed Godwit, 10 Curlew Sandpiper. 

Friday 16. Fremington Quay to Isley at high tide. 1 Osprey, 2 Greenshank and 1 Common Sandpiper

Molland Common

Today on Molland Common were 10-15 Red-Legged Partridge a few Stonechat and Linnets.

Ashford Strand on falling tide

A walk from Heanton Court to Ashford Garden Centre and back on the falling tide this afternoon  most notably were about 30 Black Tailed Godwit a single Bar Tailed Godwit and a 3 or 4 Greenshank keeping the plentiful Redshank company. Half a dozen Curlew none of which sported any leg rings made up the tally along with <40 Oystercatcher.

During a wander this morning: Red Kite (going west along the cliffs), 2 Yellow Wagtails, 2+ Spotted Flycatchers, Tree Pipit, 22 Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow Warblers, Reed Warbler, 2 Wheatears & 6 Clouded Yellows (including a helice).

Sharpa / Wrafton scrape

1 juv Spotted Redshank foraging amongst the Black - tailed Godwits.

Very fast foraging behaviour with head & neck submerged most of the time,only raising the bill for a fraction of a second to take a quick breath or to consume prey.

Difficult to photograph with the sun full on.

Bowling Green Marsh

A cycle down to Bowling Green Marsh have enjoyable lunchtime. Little Stint Juv, 4 Curlew Sand, 4 Avocet, 11 Knot, 20 Barwit, 160+ Dunlin, 22 Lapwing, 25+ Greenshank, 206 Curlew, Whimbrel, 28 Little Egret, 75 Teal, 205 Wigeon, 10 Shoveler on Bowling Green Marsh, with 35+ Sandwich Tern & 1 Common Tern off viewing platform.

Clennon Lakes Torbay

The Great White Egret ring left leg 'red ACA' was back at Clennon Lakes this morning, roosting in trees with little Egrets and a grey Heron. also present 1 Cetti's Warbler (scarce here), 2 Kingfishers, 5 Little Grebes and 4 Teal.

Plymouth branch of Devon Birds meeting at Seaton Wetlands Thursday 15 September 2022

Fourteen members of Plymouth Branch of Devon birds met on a bright and breezy day seeing a total of 50 species during their day on the reserve. A good range of species were recorded across the various habitats on the reserve. Species listed below.

Slapton Ley

This afternoon/early evening at Slapton where two Water Rails were feeding around the small pond area near the bridge and later a Great White Egret dropped in. You'll see that it has a red ring (with what appears to be ACA on the ring) on its left leg.

Bowling Green Marsh inc Viewing Platform

7 Curlew Sandpiper; 1 Little Stint; 1 Turnstone; 17 Knot (inc 1 in near summer plumage) amongst the usual Curlew, Dunlin, Black-tailed Godwit etc

1 Common Tern amongst 30+ Sandwich Tern from the Goat Walk, Topsham.

Hobby, Dawlish

East Soar

A full morning in the field turned up a Short-eared Owl in the willows, the Wryneck pretty much in the same place as 3 days ago and a migrant Dartford Warbler on Bolt Head. Also 2 Kestrel, 3 Sparrowhawk inc.2 moving west, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 90 Meadow Pipit moving west, 2 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 41 Robin, 3 Whitethroat, 29 Blackcap, 61 Chiffchaff, Spotted Flycatcher and 4 Raven.

Non-avian: Male Ruddy Darter watched at close quarters for several minutes, only the site's 2nd ever record, Southern Hawker, 2 Migrant Hawker and a Hornet Robber Fly. Ten butterfly species inc.4 Clouded Yellow, 2 Painted Lady, a Wall Brown & 21 Red Admiral.

Crownhill Down and Cadover

Crownhill Down first thing: Spotted Flycatcher, Tree Pipit (over), Common Sandpiper, Ringed Plover and Wheatear.

Birds in the Wembury Point area over high tide this morning included 45 Oystercatchers, Whimbrel, Curlew, Bar-tailed Godwit, Turnstone, four Dunlin, 31 Mediterranean Gulls, Sandwich Tern, Willow Warbler, three Chiffchaffs, Blackcap and four Wheatears.
