Lyme bay cruise 12th Aug

One of my own cruises booked up by Exeter RSPB proved both wonderful and sad. Probably well in excess of 500 Balearic Shearwaters mostly rafting 3 miles+ out to sea about 50 Manx too. Juvenile Yellow Legged Gull and 2 juvenile Black Terns. Many Mediterranean Gulls, Kittiwakes, Common Dolphin,  a few Harbour Porpoise one Grey Seal.

Sadly a very poorly adult Gannet showing all the signs of Bird Flu, throwing its head back and trying to stay upright while sat on the sea.

Tracks in the sand - Braunton Burrows

Interesting to read up on Tiger Beetles being some of the fastest insects on the planet. There is also a Dune Tiger Beetle which is closely related to the Northern Dune Tiger Beetle, the subtle difference being the width of the banding on the wing cases.

Since I find it far too hot for comfort to enter Braunton Burrows after 09:00 at the moment, I have yet to see this fascinating high speed bug.

Martin - Have you been able to see one on Northam Burrows? I assume it is too hot for comfort over on your side of the estuary as well.

Exminster Marshes

Although most of the marsh is dry there is still a little water in the lagoon. Viewed from the canal path there was a nice collection of waders and egrets feeding on the exposed mud. At least 5 cattle egrets and 10 little egrets. The wader flock comprised of about 15 black-tailed godwits, 2 snipe, 1 lapwing (possibly a juv.), 1 wood sandpiper and 1 little ringed plover. A marsh harrier flew over. A few ducks were mostly teal and shoveller.

Slapton

An evening visit to Slapton for the reported Spotted Crake which was initially very elusive although it had been reported late in the afternoon.

A Snipe was showing well along with a Heron and a family of Moorhen, Reed Warbler, Cetti’s Warbler and a Willow Warbler all put in an appearance as did an immature Sparrowhawk that showed very well when it perched in a tree in clear view.

A calling Water Rail, was soon followed by a brief view of two birds in the reeds.

The Spotted Crake then began to emerge from the reed cover and showed well for a short time before being chased off by a Moorhen, an immature Water Rail then came out of the reeds and showed well.

Tracks in the sand - Braunton Burrows

Martin

Thank you for your help in identifying the animal that left these tracks in the sand. I followed up your suggestion that it may be a Tiger Beetle by googling some photos online of tracks left in the sand by Northern Dune Tiger Beetles & they certainly look very similar to my photos.

Blaxton Meadow

A nice adult Cattle Egret on the meadow this evening, just coming out of breeding plumage. Also Black-tailed Godwit.

Braunton Burrows

Hi Rob!

Those are some very interesting tracks in the sand. I think they were made by a beetle of some species, possibly even a Tiger Beetle out on the hunt. I've seen similar patterns over on Northam Burrows.

Bowling Green Marsh - Storks

Just to add to Mark Bailey's post, I saw the White Stork flock distantly from the hide at Bowling Green Marsh, heading east at approx 1655.  It seems they have now flown as far as Sutton Bingham Reservoir.

Also seen at BGM: one each of Green Sandpiper, Ruff, Greenshank, Med Gull (at Goosemoor) and a few Snipe, plus c170 Curlew, 6 Whimbrel, Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Dunlin.  And one Shoveler.

Blaxton Meadow

Absolute pandemonium at Blaxton Meadow, with all the Black-headed Gulls and Curlews rising into the air as a Peregrine passed overhead. She then made a very determined stoop towards the Redshanks still on the water. She must have missed her prey as she came back 15 minutes later for another go, but this time hiding up in a tree in the hope they might forget she was still on the hunt. The Redshanks knew she was still there as they were alarming all the while.

The Barnacle Goose has returned to the Meadow after its short visit to Burrator.

Braunton Burrows

Too hot to be out & about after 09:00 this morning but thought this would be of interest. We think these may be snake trails (perhaps adder) in the foredunes only 70 metres from the beach.

Braunton

Lovely morning for breakfast outside, and while watching a Great Spotted Woodpecker in the trees at the top of the garden, a high pitched squeaking drew my attention to a couple of Sparrowhawks interacting close behind me, on closer inspection, there were 4 of them! Presumably all juveniles from a local nest. Meanwhile the dopy Woodpigeon continued building it's nest.

Newton Abbot Town Quay Wednesday 10th

Whilst riding along the cycleway my attention was drawn to screeching above. For about a minute I watched a very persistent and determined herring gull harassing and chasing a peregrine. They put in a great display and eventually disappeared out of sight over the town.

Sparrowhawk on the roof opposite our house this morning seeking breakfast. Darn thing wouldn't look in our direction at all! It was intent on some prey or other in the gardens behind it, eventually dropping out of sight, presumably successfully catching its meal as it didn't reappear above the rooftops.
