Escot Park - Hobbies

I managed to walk my usual circuit, this morning, now that the Beautiful Days Festival infrastructure has been dismantled and was greeted with 4 Hobbies in the air together doing their best to stir up the many Swallows and House Martins present. Also at least 2 Spotted Flycatchers were along the river bank and a Dipper and Grey Wagtail were briefly seen.

Incidentally, I was at the festival on the final night at 2330hrs as the fireworks went up and saw at least 6 Snipe in the spotlights, flushed from the marshes. I don't think they were impressed.

My first Osprey viewed from the garden. Grabbed the camera but the Osprey was very distant , rubbish record shots .

Spotted Flycatcher, 6 Wheatears, Hornet Robber-fly, Emperor Dragonfly and Clouded Yellow were the best of the rest.

Exminster Marsh

Highlight this morning was the Cattle Egret flock. First sighting was of 21 feeding just S of the M5. Fifteen minutes later 35 or so flew S from that area, with 10 peeling off W and landing beyond the railway. Fifteen minutes later again 30 or so dropped into the storage lagoon, so could be more than 40 in total. None were with the various cattle herds.

Also present were 2/3 mobile Yellow Wagtails, a Marsh Harrier, the usual Kestrel, a Water Rail and, in the lagoon, a possible Wood Sandpiper, but with bins. only, I could not be sure.

White House - Broadsands

After one hour 30 mins of observation with the scope while remaining in the same position on an incoming tide, it was interesting to see the changes that occur during that time period. Miraculously, with a speedboat towing a rubber inflatable approx 100 metres to the right with c20 noisy youngsters waiting for their turn to enjoy a ride & dog walkers to the left, my final count of 148 Ringed Plover & 145 Dunlin foraging in the mud in front of the White House held their ground until the rising tide moved them on.

Exminster Marshes

Visit mid-morning. Amazed to see 28 (possibly over 30) cattle egrets roosting in the bushes south of the lagoon. A few of the birds flew down to feed amongst cattle who were lying down. The egrets were picking flies off the cattle, especially behind their ears and around their eyes. The cattle appeared to encourage the feeding egrets by lowering their heads.

On the remaining water in the lagoon were 8 black-tailed godwits, one green sandpiper, a lapwing and a few teal. A marsh harrier flew over and a kestrel was hunting near the lagoon.

Saltpill Duck Pond area

Monday evening at Saltpill Duck Pond after the drizzle, I watch, filmed and photographed the resident Great White Egret struggling to swallow a large fish.  It tried three or four times to swallow it before it eventually got its meal.

Dawlish Warren

Watched from beside the hide for an hour over the rising tide. Waders in the bight included 80+ Ringed Plovers, 30+ Sanderlings and 2 Bar-tailed Godwits. Maximum Tern numbers on the beach were 4 Common and 80+ Sandwich, but many more were on Bull Hill or fishing, so actual totals probably half as much again. Also present were 4 Mediterranean Gulls. A Wheatear on the shingle bank was a bonus.
