Braunton raptor

Sparrowhawk on the roof opposite our house this morning seeking breakfast. Darn thing wouldn't look in our direction at all! It was intent on some prey or other in the gardens behind it, eventually dropping out of sight, presumably successfully catching its meal as it didn't reappear above the rooftops.

At the House there were at least sixty swallows and some house martins on the high ledges towards the back of the House.  Unsurprisingly in the heat, the shaded ledges seemed the most popular.

Lustleigh window casualty

I was asked to identify this dead pipit that died today after colliding with a window in Lustleigh. The hind claw measured 8 mm, in the middle of the range for Tree Pipit (7-9 mm, cf 10-13 mm in Meadow Pipit). Identification can be a doddle with birds in the hand!

Raven nest

Photos to follow

2 Ravens have nested in the Wellingtonia tree amongst tge other tall soecimum trees in the Buckerell Lodge Hotel Topsham Road Everer  EX2 4SQ.

Recently the male can be heard calling with a significantly low pitch raven call. (That sounds like a giant frog or a dog with a very sore throat.)

The couple moved in a few months ago and we are still hoping to gain evidence of their prodigy.

The sprawling grounds with access to water and an array of buds berries seeds and lawns have also provided a habitat for the endaged willow tit and passing storm disorientatated travellers.

Sheepstor Chough

Yesterday evening I saw Chris' online message and managed to get up to Sheepstor at around 1930 before it went dark. The Chough was so confiding and at times it landed to within 12 ft of us. A wonderful sighting.
