Kennick Reservoir area

Twenty-seven Mistle Thrushes were in a recently-mown hay field by the road from Blackingstone, by far the most I have ever seen. Presumably 5/6 families were sharing a short-lived food source. Plenty of Linnets in the hedgerows, largest flock 25+, two others in the teens, but only one Crossbill in the plantations around the lake. Brief (last of the year?) snatches of song from Tree Pipit and Willow Warbler were nice to hear.Ten Tufted Ducks were on the lake and 3 LBB Gulls were sharing a dead fish on the bank.

Fernworthy Reservoir

Yesterday between jobs I popped along to Fernworthy Reservoir for an hour. It was shocking to see just how low the water level was compared to the level in March (posted some photos on Facebook).  Not a lot in the way of bird life - just a few Mallard, some Canada Geese and a Little Grebe on the water. Near the car park a Chiffchaff was seen and a Green Woodpecker in the wooded area nearby.  On the road close to the cattle grid I spotted a female Redstart and what I think is a Willow Warbler although it was very yellow.

Riverside Park

Possible wood sandpiper flying about the Exe in Riverside Park at 5.30pm tonight - distant and didn't get a chance to relocate it after it flew upriver but definite sandpiper, appeared brown with a white tail and I think it whistled, though I only heard it distantly. Couldn't rule out green as I didn't get a good view, the brown may have been the light, but my impression was brown rather than blackish. Anyone else seen it??

River Taw

Just come back from a walk along the Tarka Trail, Pottington side at low tide. Lots of gulls, BH, GBB, LBB, Herring, lots of Canada Geese, nearly a dozen little egrets, a grey heron, cormorants and oystercatchers. The surprises were a glossy ibis by the sewage works in the middle channel and a crane. I had a grey heron in the foreground so I was able to go from one to the other for comparison. It was in the middle of the river and it flapped its wings several times which showed the size of the bird more than anything, plus its neck had little or no white on it, probably a juvenile.
