Wednesday 20th July 2022

Hartland Point

Over the night of the 6th/7th July, we spent the night catching and ringing Storm Petrels. We ringed 30 and had 2 others that already had rings on that weren't mine. The data is sent off to the BTO and I've just had the details of one of them:

It was ringed on Little Saltee Co. Wexford, Ireland on the 1st of July this year, so only 7 days before we retrapped it. I'll put the details of the other one on here when I get it.

Brixham Harbour

The Somerset born (and ringed) Great White Egret still in Brixham Harbour this morning viewable from the breakwater on the wooden pontoons or roosting on the barge in the outer harbour - plus 3 adult Med Gulls, Little Egret and a few Swifts.

Upper Tamar Lake

Ringed Plover 2 juv, Black-tailed Godwit 4, Common Sandpiper 5, White fronted Goose 1, Kestrel 1 juv, Coot 1, Lapwing 2, Common Gull 1, Black-headed Gull 47, Herring Gull 90, Lesser bb Gull 35, Grey Heron 18.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

Two Whimbrels dropped in at high tide; also, 5 Greenshanks, Kingfisher, c50 Swifts, 7 Mistle Thrushes, Green & Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 3 Stonechats & a Treecreeper. Good numbers of butterflies included 150+ Gatekeepers, c6 Marbled Whites, 3 Clouded Yellows & a Green-veined White. 

Last night, at least one Tawny Owl.

Avon Dam

In addition to 10 (probably juvenile) Goosanders at roost, there was a gathering of over 30 Swallows feeding around the dam and resting on the dam wall. Perhaps the Goosanders were the same group seen at Burrator the previous morning by Howard Ackford.

Nightjars on Bovey Heath 18.7.2022

Female 'fly-by' at 21.55, 'churring' briefly at 22.00 ( with regular 'qooik'ing' for the next 20 minutes or so) with two males in flight for much of that time.

Southdown Farm, Soar

40 House Martins on the buildings and still 4 Swifts around. First Clouded Yellow in nearby field. On lagoons 2 male Red-veined Darters and first Small Red-eyed Damsefly amongst others. 29C here!

6 young Wheatear 4 Pied Wagtail family groups,Linnets,Stonechat,and on the coast,Gannets over dolphin pod of possibly 4. 5 Razorbills and in the village  our first Holly Blue butterfly.

Wrafton area

An early visit to the scrape and the Reserve shows autumn migration is moving right along. 3 Teal out on the scrape (a few last week) and 2 Lapwing South of the reserve along with a largish flock of Canada Geese.

2 Kingfishers did a fly-round of the reserve pond. Bird-song declining... just a brief burst from 2 Blackcaps.

Isley Marsh to Instow

7 Herring Gull, 111 Black headed Gull, 48 Mediterranean Gull, 162 Curlew, 22 Greenshank, 1 Grey Heron, 12 Little Egret, 187 Oystercatcher, 3 Cormorant, 2 Whimbrel and a few Pied Wagtails.

A half-hour visit this morning produced 2 Med. Gulls, a Ruff and 4 Whimbrel in the three-figure flocks of B-h Gulls, Redshank, Curlew and Godwits. Also, my first returning Teal.

Redshank numbers are now rapidly rising - 89 on this morning's big high tide with 5 Greenshanks, 2 Common Sandpipers & an adult-summer Mediterranean Gull. Also, today, Kingfisher, 9 Mandarin Ducks, Green & Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 3 Stonechats (2 juvs), 2 Whitethroats, c40 Swallows, Clouded Yellow & c6 Marbled Whites.

Late morning, the small flock of roosting gulls revealed 3 Med Gulls and in the background, a Little Ringed Plover was working the shoreline.

Bowling Green Marsh Friday high tide

Ruff, 2 Green Sand, 250+ Redshank, 120+ Curlew, 100+ Blackwit, 7 Greenshank, 10+ Dunlin, Whimbrel, 8+ Teal, 150+ Sand Martin on yesterday evening. Though numbers no doubt higher due to vegetation obscuring viewing.

Escot Park - Red Kite

At last, Red Kite added to my Escot Park, local patch list, this morning marking up the 70th species since starting to watch there in Nov 2021.

It cavorted on the thermals with a couple of Buzzards, one of which was a pale juvenile.

Cancellation of filed walk

Please note that the planned field walk to Exminster Marshes on Monday 18 July is cancelled due to forecast of extreme hot weather. The East Devon programme will resume in September. Thank you and enjoy the summer.

Crownhill Down, Dartmoor

Adult Yellow-legged Gull still in gull flock in huge pit at the top of the down first thing. First Common Gull of the 'autumn' and 4 Black-headed Gulls also in the pit.
