Saturday 25th June 2022

Delighted to see that autumn migration is under way with the first 3 Black-tailed Godwits on the scrape this morning. Looking over at the reserve, a Little Egret was perched precariously on top of one of the Leylandii-type trees. In the reserve, a Grey Heron again, 2 Kingfishers chasing around, still a few Blackcaps singing, and just after a short, sharp shower, a Beautiful Damselfly.

Earlyish this morning a Common Sandpiper briefly on the far edge of the scrape, probably flushed by the cows. Also a Black-headed Gull and a foraging Sand Martin. Yesterday a good sized mixed flock of Swallows and Sand Martins with a few Swifts south of the reserve.

Braunton Burrows

Sometimes you get lucky & find yourself in the right place at the right time. Digger / Sand Wasp dragging a large caterpillar to its burrow which can be more than ten times it's weight! I remained in the same position for some time while it filled in the burrow .

First time I have seen a sand wasp with a caterpillar.

Swift second wave in Torrington

I have not seen swifts over Great Torrington this year  until now, whereas I usually spot the first one at the Carnival in late May. I have recentlylearned abolut the 3 wavs of swifts that arrive at staggered intervals, and saw 2 today here, so am wondering if the first wave failed to make it back but first year breeding birds are now in our sky
