Hope's Nose

Although not seen initially this morning, the new first summer male Eider eventually revealed itself on the southern slope of the Lead Stone.  Its camouflage was incredible against the rock - top pick up by Nose regular Pete, as it raised its head!

The summer plumaged Great Northern Diver was still northeast of the Point.  5 full adult Med Gulls was a good total for the site, with one lingering on the sea for ten minutes, off the wave-cut platform.

30 Manx Shearwaters and 5 Sandwich Terns were also seen.

On the boat trip out and back there were a number of Manx Shearwater and Guillemot in flight. On Lundy we found large numbers of Guillemot, Puffins and Razorbills. There were also Rock Pipits, Skylarks, Wheatear, Kittiwake and a few Linnets.  Also got a distant shot of some Sika Deer.

Hope's Nose

Pleased to find the site's fourth separate Eider of the year this morning.  Unlike the more piebald immature males of April and May, this young male was far browner with less white.  As seems usual with this species of late, I picked it up just north of the Orestone before it drifted in and spent time around and on the Lead Stone, where it can go out of view.

Elsewhere, a slightly distant but cracking Great Northern Diver in summer plumage was east of the Point, Adult Med Gull on the sea, 3 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Sandwich Terns and a lone Swallow in off.

2 Grey Seals, Harbour Porpoise, Painted Lady, and my first Hummingbird Hawk-moth at the Nose, added a bit of variety.

Wrafton scrape

Arrived this morning to find 3 Gulls on the scrape - nothing odd about that, but they were all different. 1 each of Herring, Black-headed and Lesser Black-Backed. A few House Martins were also buzzing about. Later on from in the reserve I also saw 1 Sand Martin and a couple of Swallows over the scrape. Perhaps the first rain in a few weeks attracted them. Singing Chiffchaff, Reed Warbler and Blackcap in the reserve.
