Wrafton

After a successful foray to Somerset, just wanted to check for Sand Martins at Wrafton, after not seeing any abroad(!) 8 Godwits on the scrape but not much else, or on Wrafton Pond but glad I took a second look at both places - A Little Grebe on the pond and 2 Glossy Ibis on the scrape!

Tarka trail - Braunton > Barnstaple

Similar number of Chiffchaffs as previously but an increase in Blackcaps, counted 10 this time. 2 Common Whitethroat but no Lesser Whitethroat detected.

On Bradiford Reserve at high tide 41 Black tailed Godwits resting.

On the Taw Estuary at Pottington the usual flock of Oystercatchers & Whimbrel heard but not seen from the Penhill Marsh direction.

Wigford Down

Red Kite low over Wigford Down, Dartmoor, at 08:25. It was mobbed by two Buzzard and a Raven before flying high SE over Cadover at 08:40. Redstart, 2 Cuckoo and Green Woodpecker also in the area.

Instow

Late post. Wednesday evening on the rocks at Instow were 15 or so Ringed Plovers. Near the Jetty there were two Swallows, a Starling, a few House Sparrows, a few Linnets, 10 Whimbrel, a Great crested Grebe and two Great northern Divers.

Slapton sands

Evening walk down to beach. 3 Sandwich terns, 3 guillemot, 2 gannets all close in. 24 Manx shearwaters flew south only a few hundred yards off shore.  1 fulmar flew by.

Braunton Marshes > American Road

Yet another visit on the bike on my usual spring migrant circuit of approx 10 miles. Similar numbers of Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler & Blackcap as last visit 

6 Cettis Warblers & an expected increase in Common Whitethroat numbers totalling 14 during this visit. Much more worrying is that I only heard 1 Lesser Whitethroat over this distance.

Also 1 Jay seen on several occasions, but regrettably no Cuckoos seen or heard, yet the weather this morning was perfect for this bird to announce it's arrival.

Arrived at the scrape to see 22 Godwits loafing in the centre of the pond. More importantly a Little RInged Plover was on the muddy margin at the far side. A few each of Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler singing in the reserve.

Aylsebeare Common

Yesterday's photos from my trip to Aylesbeare Common where it took many hours of searching and waiting around for a good view of the Dartford Warbler.  While on the common I saw a Garden Warbler, Blackcap, a few Linnets, a Wren and a couple of Buzzards. Exminster Marshes

The visit at lunch time coincided with the end of the high tide so the wader roost was still active. A good selection of waders included two ringed plover, one bar-tailed godwit, c40 black-tailed godwit, one dunlin (in smart summer plumage), a few curlew and about a dozen whimbrel. Nearer the road 5 cattle egret were with the cattle. Elsewhere 3+ sedge warblers and 4+ reed warblers. On the lagoon 8 tufted duck and 3 little grebes.

Exminster / Teignbridge / South Hams

A roundabout cycle from Heathfield to Kingsteignton yesterday returning along the Templar Way gave eight singing Blackcaps and a couple of Chiffchaff.

Arriving home at South Brent a singing Blackcap in the garden.

An evening visit to Exminster marsh gave two Swallow, seven Cattle Egret and the reported Short Eared Owl.

This morning a trip up to the Owley Moor Gate onto Dartmoor gave a feeble calling Cuckoo, Green Woodpecker, Song Thrush, four Blackcap, Wren, numerous Meadow Pipit, Stonechat, Raven, GSWP and a Roe buck.

Back at home at South Brent, two Green Woodpecker calling and two male Blackcap in full song.

Down to Ivybridge for the leucistic Robin, while watching it four Blackcap (3M & 1F) and a Wren.

Monday 18th April 2022

West Dartmoor

Had a few days near West Dartmoor over the weekend and pleased to see good numbers of Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Stonechat and Wheatear around Cox Tor area. Near Vixen Tor and the woods below Tree Pipit and plenty of Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff singing. Cuckoo calling this morning in this area and first of the spring for us. No photos just a pleasure to see and hear.

Wrafton area

Highlights out of the nets this morning were: an adult male Kingfisher, a juvenile female Goldcrest, and a smart male Blackcap. Best was the first Reed Warbler this year; a retrap which I ringed as a 3J (recently fledged) on 30 July 2016. It's just got back from it's 6th trip to Africa, looked fresh as a daisy, and this is the first time I have retrapped it. Early on the scrape about 55 Godwits, later a lone Common Sandpiper.

3 swallows, 2 willow warblers on walk down. Clearly a mass arrival of whitethroats as they seemed to be singing from every bush and gorse patch. 1 tree pipit near Pigs nose  As we left the village 1 cuckoo flew across the road.

North Haldon

Between the Belvedere and Perridge this afternoon were newly arrived Willow Warblers (2), Whitethroats (5) and Tree Pipits (3), one of which performed the "parachute" display.

Wrafton area

A short ringing session curtailed by too much wind and a lack of birds gave me time to walk to the estuary. White Reed Bunting (singing like a Reed Bunting!) and a Common Sandpiper at Sherpa. at the mouth of the Caen River, 3 Whimbrel. Early on a large flock of probably 80+ Black-tailed Godwits on the scrape.

Shaugh Prior ~ three Mistle Thrush.

Cadover ~ Flock of Sand Martin attracting a male Sparrowhawk, numerous Meadow Pipit, Skylark and Stonechat, one Cuckoo seen and a second bird calling, male Wheatear.

Towards Sheep's tor several Song Thrush.

B3212 above Two Bridges where Muddilake Brook runs beneath the road four Grasshopper Warblers reeling, two of the birds seen briefly.

Towards the Warren House ~ a female Merlin sat on a roadside post near Powder Mill.

Headland Warren ~ a male Whinchat in full song, two Wheatear, a distant calling Cuckoo.

Emsworthy Mire

Lots of Willow Warblers, some Chiff Chaffs, a Blackcap, Grasshopper Warbler singing in the Willow carr of Emsworth Mire near the pool. Two Redstart nest prospecting in the trees near the barn, Tawny Owl calling from the conifers west of the mire. Marsh violet in the stream.

Reed warblers arrived this week en masse. Today at least 10 in Higher Ley and 4 in Ireland bay staking their claims. Also, 1 guillemot in bay and red breasted merganser flying past.

Soar Mill Valley & West Soar

Best today were 2 Red Kites low over Soar Mill Cove before gaining considerable height and drifting off eastwards. Many more Whitethroats, Blackcaps & Chiffchaffs in but only 2 Swallows. Several Wheatears pn territory.

Non-avian: first Wall Brown & Orange Tip; Large area of Badger diggings and latrines way down the cliffs on the grassy areas by Steeple Cove!

Passage House, Teign Estuary

The Spotted Redshank showed well east of Passage House for 15 mins or so on the rising tide.

Nearby, 3 Whimbrels, 7 Greenshanks, Greylag, Common Sandpiper, fem R B Merganser.

Hope's Nose

The 2 imm male Eiders still present close to the Lead Stone until the mist lifted mid-morning.  

Puffins were sat on the sea east of the Point before flying south.  Elsewhere on site - 3 Whimbrels, 4 Swallows, 3 Common Scoter and a Great Crested Grebe.

Sherpa Marsh

After leaving Wrafton Pond, I popped out to the metal gantry before returning to the pond.  On-Route in both directions the following were spotted: a couple of Skylarks; a few Linnets; a Meadow Pipit; a distant Cetti's Warbler; a couple of Canada Geese; a couple of Grey Herons; a Greenfinch; and a pair of Stonechats.

Wrafton pond

Today it was very quite ob the pond apart from a singing Sedge Warbler. There was a male Blackcap and a male Reed Bunting in the bushes beside the pond.  Early morning 07.30ish there were 35 Black-tailed Godwits and a couple of Teal on the Scrape. I popped out to the metal gantry for a while before returning to Wrafton Pond (see separate post).  On my return Sue turned up at the wooden viewing platform , we did a little Butterfly spotting and saw a Green Vein, and Small White and at least an Orange Tip.

In addition to Mark's post earlier, first thing, 4 PB Brent Geese sat on the sea, just east of Thatcher Rock. 

Nearby, on the lower slope, a singing Tree Pipit perched for five minutes, before disappearing over the south side.

Lopwell Dam/Maristow 15.4.2022

At about 1120 an Osprey appeared over the wood on the westward side of the dam.  It circled briefly then returned back over the trees.

Also of note in the area  4 Common Sandpipers, 3 Blackcaps, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Swallows, a Stock Dove and a Sparrowhawk.

3 Puffins - 1 sat on the sea off the point and 2 more flew south close in c830am- 1 Whimbrel on rocks around the point then flew off into the mist, the 2 Eider still by Leadstone, 2 Sandwich Tern, 17 Manx, GND north, 13 Common Scoter,Swallow in off and a Purple Sand

Northam, near Torridge Bridge

Two Sandwich Tern fishing below the Torridge bridge between the bridge and Instow. At a stretch I might just add them to my Garden List!
