Devon Bird Sightings: Bird News from 22nd–28th February 2022

Scarce Breeding Birds - important posting guidelines

Please do not post any information about scarce or rare breeding species. They may be vulnerable to persecution or disturbance.

The exception is information on these species at well known sites (e.g. Broadsands for Cirl Bunting and Aylesbeare for Dartford Warbler) or birds which are obvious migrants away from breeding sites.

If in any doubut, please don't post but report your sighting to the county recorder asap. Site editors cannot commit to editing posts which breach these guidelines, and the whole post may be removed or not admitted.

Further details can be found in the link below, but note, Wood Warbler is now also included as a scarce breeder:-

Exe Estuary cruise

Today's Stuart Line cruise did well for gulls: adult Mediterranean Gull off Shelly Beach (Exmouth) and a juv Kittiwake settled on the river off Powderham were the highlights, with 10+ Lesser Black-backs suggesting that passage is underway. No sign of the B-n Grebes, but 15+ Great Crested scattered around. Best of the rest: <10 Shags, a few dozen Pintail between Lympstone and Exton, 22 Mergansers (mostly Turf-Topsham) and the usual Spotted Redshank at Topsham. Fewer waders generally than earlier in the month, with small numbers of Golden and Grey Plover, Sanderlings, Bar-tailed Godwits and Greenshank, but still 1000+ Black-tailed Godwits and hundreds of Avocets and Dunlin scattered over mudflats.
