Burrator Reservoir and Yennadon Down

There’s been plenty of action on my home patch of Burrator Reservoir and Yennadon Down recently. There was a Hobby on the 21st and a group of 6 Spotted Flycatchers with one Pied on the 25th. Any wader sighting at Burrator is a major event, so two Green Sandpipers with a Common Sandpiper yesterday represented patch firsts for me. Single Kingfishers were seen both today and yesterday (another scarce Burrator bird).
Today, there was a single Green Sandpiper and two Snipe (only my second ever Burrator sighting) along with two pairs of Little Grebes, one with two juveniles, and a Firecrest in the woodland. Total Goosander numbers have been hard to assess since I’ve been seeing groups of various numbers, up to a maximum of ten, over the last few weeks. A group of 12 this evening comprised two adult females and 10 juveniles. Three or four of the juvs were younger than the others, so I assume that at least two broods are involved. Still plenty of House Martins around Burrator Lodge, with one still visiting a nest. On Yennadon Down today, a group of four Spotted Flycatchers with a Redstart.

Osprey at Horsey Mere

Great Bank Holiday morning at Horsey with Alain Craddock.
Osprey fishing in the Mere for a good 20 minutes. Kingfisher, female Wheatear, Greenshanks, Med Gulls and little egrets were the highlights.

Felt sorry for a young couple who had driven here to see the Osprey. It was hovering and diving right behind them for the whole of their walk to Crow Point and they didn’t turn round once, and consequently missed the show. Shame. Salutary lesson for us all. Stop and look around when birding.

Bearded vulture seen flying over reservoir. About 12.00 noon. Came from ENE direction over reservoir and circled over Fernworthy  forest before heading in a SSW direction towards Postbridge, Princetown, Plymouth. Geoff Stephens first alerted  and both agreed this enormous bird could be nothing else, long wedge shaped tail & short neck, straight wings and just effortless gliding . Sorry for poor description hope there was another siting elsewhere.

Crow Point Toll Road

Had a text from Andy Lansdell saying he was going to investigate the Caen River for Curlew Sandpipers, so off I went again! 1 Kingfisher, 4/5 Greenshank, a couple of Redshank, 2 Curlew (half way to the target!) Then at the entrance to the breach at Horsey, almost all the small Gulls were Mediterranean - we counted at least 49. The Little Owl showed again. On the way back, all the Gulls took to the air and Andy saw the splash as an Osprey took a fish and headed off east. First of the autumn up here we think.
