Emsworthy Mire (E.Dartmoor).

A very pleasant morning field walk in spite of cold N wind and waterlogged ground for 12 members of DB (as arranged by East Devon Branch).  From the car park a few Meadow Pipit and a pair of Stonechat were present but birds appeared thin on the ground until we headed north from the red barn.  The target winter thrushes did not come easily but beyond the last wall 2 Ring Ouzel, small flocks of Redwing, a Fieldfare, 2 Mistle Thrush were present at a distance. Overhead a flock of c100 Golden Plover were circling, plus 2 Buzzard and RavensGt S. Woodpecker was finally added to a count of 18 species.

Thanks to Alex and Shelagh Parsons for leading us and keeping the list.

Walk around the southern part of the marshes late morning. A single marsh harrier was near the lagoon and a juv. hobby over Station Road. Elsewhere a flock of c50 lapwing was the most I have seen this autumn and duck numbers continue to grow. An assortment of feral/hybrid geese now include bar-headed, snow and several crosses with Canada geese. Overhead a few skylark and chaffinch all going west. Heard water rail (x2) and Cettis. As I was leaving there was 1 (possibly 2) cattle egret near the railway bridge.

This morning my daughter found a Wryneck on her doorstep in Bishopsteignton and as it is such a rare species took this photo and told me about it.  It was apparently uninjured in any way and we can only assume that is was a migratory bird which collapsed in some way after roosting overnight. Cadover around to Legis tor

Hoped to be earlier but thick fog, so starting 10.30

Cadover-  Redwings (over in Brisworthy's fields- noting lack of holly berries this year)
Goldcrest, stone chat, pippits, robin, great/blue tit, woodpigeon, pied wagtail, grey wagtail, crow, green woodpecker. A first for me, a kingfisher, fishing further upstream towards the farm.

Walking around to top of legis tor then to ringmoor down.

Kestrel on top of legis tor being mobbed by the pippits, multiple ravens, sky larks passing by, golden plovers, at max one time easily 300+ birds, an initial startle from a member of the public caused them to fly, break into smaller groups and spread out, but came back to gather on ringmoor down allowing a nice photoshoot with my laying in amongst the grasses.
Also stonechat, female yellowhammer, magpie, g.s woodpecker at the plantation, robins, and buzzard.

George Nympton

Counted 17 Buzzards in the field with me whilst Ploughing today.Maybe more hiding in the trees.Estimate 700 gulls after the same worms as the Buzzards.Mostly Juveniles but what surprised me was the majority of the adults were LBB Gulls with the rest being Herring Gulls. That presumably meant that there were likely to be about 500 LBB's in one group. The Gulls find the plough so quickly in the morning do some of them carry mobiles?!!!
