Changes to Devon Bird Sightings

This page was initially set up to give a concise news summary of birds of interest seen in Devon. Anyone noting interesting species, passage and counts could post the details to inform other birders what was going on around the county. Photos could also be added for interest and to enliven the posts. It was accepted that because other wildlife was of interest, this would also appear especially when included in a birding post.

However, in the last year, more posts have been appearing purely on subjects other than birds. Whilst of interest to some observers, this is detracting from the aim of the pages, i.e. principally bird sightings.

Devon Birds has therefore taken the decision to require contributors of other wildlife to post this in the Other Wildlife subject. However it’s accepted that occasional, exceptional, other wildlife seen during a birding outing justifies inclusion in the bird sightings post. This should, however, be a minor part of the post.

Photos are often appearing as a gallery, or even acting as a personal photo blog, rather than of county-wide sightings of interest. Devon Birds has a Gallery which members and other birders are welcome to submit their often stunning photos to, for others to see. Many of these photos need not then appear on this page. From now on, only two photos per post will be accepted to help keep posts more concise.

Devon Birds very much welcomes posts that already meet these criteria and those that will continue to do so. It would also be great to widen the input from keen birders who currently don’t contribute, including some old friends who have dropped out. Hopefully the changes will encourage wider participation, so if you look at the site but don’t post, please consider doing so.

Our aim is to provide a concise daily news summary of bird sightings around Devon, and these changes should fulfil this goal.

Below is a summary of the changes:

  • Bird News (bird sightings of interest, with added occasional other wildlife) will be the default subject when visitors arrive at this page.
  • Other Wildlife posts therefore won’t initially be shown unless visitors click Other Wildlife under Subjects on the right-hand side.
  • Only two photos can now be submitted per post.
  • General bird photos should be posted in our Gallery please.
  • Co-authors should now only use the Submit a Blog Post form, to ensure a more consistent format for posts.

Velator reserve

A truncated ringing session this morning with rain interrupting twice. First bird I saw as I went round opening nets was a surprise Barn Owl which drifted off silently and not seen subsequently. Later a squawking bird sounded first like a Jay, then a BH Gull, then a Magpie... after a few moments it flew - Jay. First instinct was right. As I was furling the nets a very dark female Marsh Harrier came over and missed a net by a few feet. Ringed 1 Chiffchaff. 1 reed Warbler and 6 Blackcap. Plus some locals.

Chudleigh Siskins

This weekend we have had the eleventh fatality of our Siskins this summer! In spite of diligent washing and disinfecting of feeders and bird baths we have lost 11 Siskins, 1 Goldfinch and 1 Blue Tit. Green Finches and remaining Goldfinches are unscathed. I assume that this is some sort of virus?

I thought that this may be of interest to recorders.

Is there anything similar occurring elsewhere in Devon?

Exe Powderham to Turf

Early morning WeBS count in fine weather was a little disappointing with very few waders on this stretch; the excitement lay elsewhere. Overhead 3 sightings of osprey (probably same bird) and 2 swifts. On the seawall one wheatear and (briefly) one yellow wagtail, an additional 2 yellow wagtails were amongst the cattle feeding south of Turf and accompanied by over 30 pied wagtails. An impressive count of 929 Canada geese on a stubble field near Powderham church was a minimum count as more were hidden by the trees. The snow goose was with them.

Watched from the hide 09:10 till 10:45

A good morning started with  9 curlew sandpipers to the left of the hide with another 2 curlew sandpipers close in front of the hide, good numbers of Juv Dunlin and good numbers of redshank, 1 common sandpipers, 1 juveniles ruff, 50+ pintail, 60+ wigeon , 4 pochard, 3 gadwall, 300+ black headed gulls, 5 bar tailed godwits , 3 whimbrel, good numbers of black tailed godwits and curlew but due to extensive vegetation no count of these could be done accurately.

then watched from viewing platform from 10:50 till 12:00

as the tide dropped and birds ventured out from the marsh initial group of 150+ juvenile Dunlin included 13 curlew sandpipers another couple of groups of Dunlin joined this group and included another 2 curlew sandpipers then another group of 80+ Juv Dunlin flew across and included 1 curlew sandpiper  after checking all the groups of waders again the final tally for the morning was confirmed as  16 juvenile curlew sandpipers  my highest count on the estuary in 10 years of watching.

White Stork Lopwell

Was sat watching a kingfisher, turned and looked to see a bird drift up river thought I'd get some practice in as I've been fiddling with camera settings and focusing on moving birds.  I assumed it was a heron, but as I tried focusing once it was overhead, I knew it was not a heron, and as I've seen reports of storks in Cornwall, I automatically thought this was what was flying overhead.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

At the scrape I met a man who had been shown an Osprey at the river-mouth yesterday evening. So after a quick check around the reserve, I went there. On the way 4 Whimbrel, about 20 Curlew, 1 Greenshank, 1 Common Sandpiper 3 Kestrels, 2 Buzzards, several each of Meadow Pipit, Goldfinch, Stonechat, and 2 Wheatears. Over on one of the falling down barns in Horsey, a bird of prey, but extreme distance made id difficult. Eventually took extreme range photo and found I had been staring not at an Osprey, but a Peregrine Falcon.... On the way back 2 Black-tailed Godwits with the loafing Gull flock by Sherpa main pond. In the reserve, a Tawny Owl. 2 Little Egrets on the scrape.

Horsey Island this morning as tide retreats

Walking the bank from White House we saw numerous mixed flocks of Dunlin and Ringed Plover (maybe up to 50 Dunlin and 20 R Plover) A single Greenshank was fishing in one of the pools and a juvenile Northern Wheatear perched briefly on the bank top before flying off South. A Great Black Backed Gull tackled a crab...and won. A Cormorant was drying its wings on the mud bank and there were scattered BH Gulls throughout, maybe 25 in total.
