Tarka Trail

A walk along the Pottington side of the Tarka Trail this afternoon. Wind very strong and an already rising tide. Groups of Mallards 30-40 out in the river. Just beyond the end of the industrial estate where Bradiford Water cuts through to join the Taw were about 30-40 Teal in groups along with some more Mallard. Further along in another field was a group of about 80-90 BH gull. A solitary Redshank was sheltering from the wind in a gulley. A huge amount of tree debris could be seen floating along in the river. Yesterday along the Pill at Fremington the 4 Glossy Ibis showed well and before the tide covered the sandbanks on the Taw large numbers of Crows could be seen on them.

Off Dawlish Town two Slavonian grebes on sea.  Then Teignmouth to Sprey Point a red-throated diver and a great northern diver. No scoter flock as might be expected this time of year.

Salcombe ~ white GND

Down to Salcombe to try and find the reported albino Great Northern Diver, how such a large pure white bird proved to be so elusive is beyond me, two normal coloured birds were readily viewable and after some time I spotted the white GND  from the Whitestrand car park across the river to the left of Snapes Point but it simply disappeared, it eventually showed up by the Lifeboat and Whitestrand pontoon, a truly stunning bird to see, it cheered up a wet and foggy day.

It appears to have a dark eye rather than the pink/red of an albino so wonder if it is actually a leucistic bird, either way well worth a trip down to see it before we get locked down.

Barnstaple Song Thrush

Queuing in the dark, damp early morning mizzle outside Sainsbury's a Song Thrush was singing its heart out. A lady behind me said it was a song of hope and better things to come!

Happy Christmas everyone!
