Sightings Page Changes

Acting on comments to Devon Birds some changes have been made to this page. To the right of this header post you'll see there are now several subjects for you to choose to read and post on. Just click your chosen subject and use as previously.

Please be careful not to post under the wrong subject. If you do, you can still easily go back to edit and change the subject yourself so it appears on the right page.

Please try and keep posts short, particularly in the Scarce / Rare Birds & Passage Counts page. Photographs are still very welcome.

For help with ID email photos to id@devonbirds.org.

Sea off Brixham

Lovely oily calm sea off Brixham yesterday. Fishing was slow, but it gave me good opportunities to see the wildlife. Passed 4 pods of dolphins during the day, with some jumping round the boat. Harbour porpoises off Berry Head. 2 Puffins about 10m off the boat, a rare sight for me. 2 Great Skua seen during the day, one stationing itself about 150m away and then attacking the many gulls (mainly Herring, Great and Lesser Black Backed) and Fulmars, as they took the fish guts we threw overboard. Only one Manx Shearwater seen, but many Razorbill and Guillemot. Highlight for me was the high number of Storm Petrel around the boat, up to 8 at a time, gracefully skimming the water and taking the scraps from the slick we created. A conservative estimate of 20+ during the day. No terns at all during the day, but on a trip 4 days earlier saw a plank float by, crewed by 6 Sandwich Terns, evenly spaced along its length. Really must take a camera to sea to record these sights!
