Dawlish Warren

Please take extra care when visiting Dawlish Warren. We have been informed that due to the recent bad weather there has been significant erosion from Groyne 10 eastwards. This means that access along the site, to and from Warren Point (and the bird hide) will be via the beach only, with a risk of being cut off for a period either side of high water! Signs have been put up to alert people to the hazards, but people need to be aware that access routes that they have become used to may not be available and they need to exercise extreme caution,  with the possibility of being cut off by the tide, and people are strongly urged not to try climbing the sand cliffs. Further information is available on the Teignbridge District Council website.

Start Point 27 November

Yesterday midday at Start Point, between about 1200 and 1300hrs, a large passage  of c150 Lesser-Black-backed Gulls, showing characteristics of   blackish winged Larus fuscus intermedius or Larus fuscus (Baltic Gull).  Of these only about 10% were juveniles. Gulls flew mainly in gaggles of 20 -30 birds low over the top of the point in a short patch of clear weather.  Total of 130 adult birds physically counted.

Bideford Old Bridge

Life is full of surprises!  I was driving back into Bideford from East-the Water at just after 15:40 this afternoon and became stuck in traffic (roadworks traffic lights) almost in the middle of the queue stopped there on the bridge.  There was a small group of Herring and BH Gulls squabbling along the seaward-side parapet and generally being "hassled" by a Glaucous Gull in(almost certainly) third-winter plumage, obviously I couldn't use binocs/camera).  A Devon first for me.

Matford Pools

The drake American Wigeon was still present this afternoon up until 1510hrs at least. But it wasn't on the main pool as it has the past 3 days, the bird having moved to the northerly reedy pool edge and ditch where it spent most of its time during last winter's visit. A Fox was spooking the wildfowl on the main pool, so it probably decided it was safer in its old haunt!

We shall see over the following days & weeks whether this has been successful.
