Dawlish Warren

Please take extra care when visiting Dawlish Warren. We have been informed that due to the recent bad weather there has been significant erosion from Groyne 10 eastwards. This means that access along the site, to and from Warren Point (and the bird hide) will be via the beach only, with a risk of being cut off for a period either side of high water! Signs have been put up to alert people to the hazards, but people need to be aware that access routes that they have become used to may not be available and they need to exercise extreme caution,  with the possibility of being cut off by the tide, and people are strongly urged not to try climbing the sand cliffs. Further information is available on the Teignbridge District Council website.

Soussons

Great Grey Shrike reported this morning at Soussons near the plantation.

Posted October 17th, 2016 at 3:54 pm by George & Julia Harris in Scarce / Rare Birds & Passage Counts

Start Point etc

Some thick cloud, occasional heavy showers. Fresh WSW wind.

Got to Start Point for first light and did a vis mig watch from near the car park from 07:20-08:40. The following flew S-SW, 3 Swallows, 8 Skylarks, 80 Meadow Pipits, 23 'alba' Wagtails, 70 Chaffinches, 620 Linnets, 10 Siskins and 770 Goldfinches. At the start of the watch a Ring Ouzel came out of the bracken and perched on a fence near me but this promise did not lead to much, around the farm were single Wheatear, Redwing and 4 Chiffchaffs. Walked down the sheltered road to the light and nothing. Getting back near to the car park produced one of the most frustrating moments of my birding life. Picked up a bird of prey low down above the footpath north of the car park ( where i'd been vis migging earlier ) with two corvids in attendance. Instinctivly thought Harrier confirmed when I raised my bins. It was also either Montagu's or Pallid, with dark cheeks and a distinct collar around them quite likely the latter. Lost it behind the car park hedge and as it reappeared  still low at the top of Mattiscombe Valley thought better try my luck with the camera. Big ask of my basic bridge camera and I was unsuccessful. I could see by the corvids ( more now on its case ) it was heading towards the valley bottom and west towards Lannacombe. I hung around the car park for an hour then tried a couple high spots behind Prawle and Portlemouth predictably with no luck. Had I come up from the light 2 minutes earlier I would have probably took some video of it at close range, 30 seconds later and I would have been blissfully unaware. Would love someone else to pick it up elsewhere.

Went down and looked for migrants at South and North Hallsands but really quiet despite some good sheltered spots. WeBS count at Beesands produced 48 Gadwall and a Shoveler.

Berry Head

2 Yellow-browed Warblers one at top pf quarry track them moved into woods toward Berry Head Hotel the other on the edge of the meadow near the drinking trough (neither the same bright legged + billed bird from Sunday near Wardens Bungalow) these birds varied in plumage note median covert (forward wing-bars).

Sheltering in my car from a very heavy shower John Lusher phoned to tell me about an Alpine Swift that he found flying past as he was sheltering in Sentry 'box' at the end of the head - a quick run out for me to find the bird still present quartering the headland. It kept on disappearing but returning again to same area - perhaps it will roost in the quarry tonight?

Ring Ouzels - Starehole Valley

To add to George & Lesley's earlier post.  At least 6 Ouzels present, spread throughout the valley.  Didn't see the Garden Warbler but only one Chiffchaff and a female Blackcap. A noticeable change from last week when many more migrants were showing. It was quite breezy so they were maybe squirreled away deep in the hawthorns.

YBW - Colebrook

Being a 'fair weather' sort of person I wasn't too happy at being stuck indoors when the rain came today.  But sometimes staying in has its rewards.  This came in the form of my second only Yellow-browed Warbler for my own back garden.  It didn't hang around long in the hawthorn.  Also in the loose flock were two Goldcrest amongst the regular five tit species.
