River Dart at Dartington

A nice afternoon walk along the River Dart. Its amazing what you see if you stand in one spot for an hour. 2 pairs of buzzards, calling and sky dancing, a dozen or more screaming swifts, a female mandarin with 9 young, 4 ravens overhead, mistle thrush, a female goosander on passage up river, a kingfisher up and down river, possible yellow wagtail, and the best part was a pair of GS woodpeckers feeding their constantly squawking young in a hollow tree. On the butterfly front was common blue, male and female, small copper, small white. A very enjoyable and sunny afternoon

Torquay (Coastal Residential)

A morning visit to the friend who lives just off of Ilsham Marine Drive in Torquay this morning, he showed me some images taken on the 5th May 2015 showing four Wheatears in his garden, two males two females.

Song Thrush in the garden gathering worms.

Peregrine calling overhead

Almost continuous visits from a small Warbler species gathering nesting material which from the images I took I suspect is a Willow Warbler.

A nest box fitted with livecam showed a growing clutch of Blue Tit chicks which looked as if they are just about ready to leave the nest.

A pair of Blackcaps had been showing in the garden all through the winter until recently.

And for the duration of most of the visit a Vixen sunning herself on the back patio and garden area.

Vennford Reservoir- Dart Valley Nature Reserve - Bench Tor etc.

An excellent day with 18 members (East Devon Branch) trying to avoid contact with similar sized group from RSPB!

Total of 43 species listed and all target birds found ( Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, Cuckoo, Tree Pipit, Siskin, Redpoll, Yellow Hammer).  Also, a Hobby and family groups of 3+ Treecreepers and 3 Mistle Thrush.  Indications of many species breeding and a general feeling that bird numbers were up on last year with good numbers of target birds. Thanks to Jean Millen for leading us.

Stover & South Brent area

A visit to Stover Country Park yesterday gave a low flying Buzzard being harried by a Mistle Thrush at Drum Bridges.

Stover lake had very little of interest one Lesser Blacked Backed Gull, the Great Crested Grebes are down to one chick from the initial three, but it’s a good size so may well survive. Pair of Mute Swan still sitting.

The feeding platform had a good range of birds using the feeder including Marsh and Coal Tits, a pair of Bullfinch, Greenfinch, Jay and Nuthatch.

“Wood Pigeons” at home at South Brent and also between home and Stover small flocks of Wood Pigeons up to 20 birds mostly down low headed towards the moors, constant movement throughout the day.

Above Dean Prior a large field being ploughed failed to attract any Red Kites but did provide pickings for a large flock of Herring Gulls a range of Corvids and two Buzzards, two sightings of a hunting male Sparrow hawk while scanning the field.

At home male Sparrow Hawk hunting and a Peregrine falcon over the roof mid evening.

Red Kite in North West Devon Today

Have today 27th May 2015 seen a Red Kite near Bradworthy following silaging tractors to scavenge small animals killed. Compared to our buzzards the wings were so long and it’s flight was fast and aerobatic…amazing to see this lovely bird! :)

Starlings ~ South Brent

On Friday I had a count of 22 Starlings mostly fledglings a field occupied by sheep alongside the house, yesterday the number rose to an estimated 60 which were alternating between feeding and perching on the hedge tops.

Although South Brent does attract good numbers of Starlnigs in the winter months I have never previously seen this many young birds birds during previous summers.

I know that I have had a pair breeding in an ivy covered Holly tree but clearly there have been more active breeding pairs than I had realised.

The last few days has also seen almost constant visits to the feeders from a pair of Greater Spotted Woopeckers and from the state of thier plumage I am guessing that they are also feeding a nest of youngsters.

Exminster Marsh (yesterday late post 23-5-2015)

Arrived on the canal footpath just before 1830hrs with no one else on site and after scanning around managed to pickup the Gull-Billed Tern which was distant around the centre pool between main lagoon and brick pillboxes in front of the American Golden Plover nearby. Must have only flew in just before i got there as the other birders i saw leaving in the middle car-park did not see it. Managed to get 2 other birders who came shortly afterwards onto it before it flew back out to the estuary at 1909hrs. Also a Hobby seen flying low near the tern and c50 Swifts flying around the middle car-park.

Managed to take some record video footage.

4.15pm today thought i saw a couple of Buzzards soaring VERY high in the sky over Crediton, on closer inspection turned out to be 7 of them! Then presumed Red Kites?

Link to VERY poor video...

So sorry, only a couple of fleeting glimpses, they were so high, the camera was on full zoom and was struggling to focus and the battery was running out. It was all a bit of a rush! Can anyone confirm?

Eds: At least 6 were Red Kites!

Both the middle and the end carparks were full, so probably best to park in the RSPB carpark and walk! Also, one silent Yellow Wagtail north over station road as I was walking towards the canal.
