Fremington Spoonbill

Looking at Chris`s image of the Spoonbill in Fremington Pill and the rings on its legs makes me think it`s a new bird for the Taw Estuary. I can find no details of a similarly colour ring coded bird on the Taw among my records. A check of Euring website reveals that all yellow flagged birds with a combination of other coloured rings indicates that it`s a Dutch ringed bird.

Brixham

Finally caught up with the White-billed Diver today after being out of Devon for the last few days. Thanks Bill - a great find! In addition to the BT Divers and GN Divers and Black Guillemot and the Iceland Gull, the only bird not mentioned on previous posts was a single Red-necked Grebe offshore late morning.

First year Iceland Gull

Glaucous and Iceland Gulls

The Glaucous Gull on the River Teign still 11.30am midway between Lower Netherton and Coombe Cellars and the Iceland Gull still at 4pm in Brixham Harbour, very close inshore off the slipway off the lower part of Astra Zenaca car park.

Brixham

What a way to end 2013 more Divers than you can shake a stick at !!

Black Throated and Great Northern Divers just about constantly in view across the harbour, Guillemots just outside the harbour boundary, a very confiding Razor Bill did a swim past just below the harbour wall, the White Billed Diver had every one moving around but wherever you tried to spot it from it stayed well out on the water often in view but never close.

Lots of Turnstones and Shags

Highlight of the visit was the Iceland Gull that was frequently within 20 yards both in the air and on the water behind the fish quay building

Numerous close in swim bys by some very entertaining Seals

Clennon Valley

A walk around the Clennon Valley obstacle course (flooding, mud, fallen trees) this afternoon was worth the effort as the Yellow-Browed Warbler appears to be back, ranging along the stream from the YMCA up to the main pond.

Have a great new year!

Fremington Quay - 30th December

Single Spoonbill just off the entrance to the Quay at around mid-day- probably one of the Isley Marsh group.

Later visited Velator Quay, (about 16.15 - 16.30hrs) & watched one of the Marsh Harriers coursing over Sherpa Marsh - this one has a very pale coloured head.

River Teign

Lower Netherton - fw glaucous gull this morning @ 1035. A massive individual, clearly outsizing the great black-backed gulls.

Topsham Recreation Ground

A female/1W type Black Redstart was the only bird of note today; presumably the same bird reported to me by visiting Japanese birder Yusuke Umegaki on 7th Dec.

Some pics from my walk along the R. Caen at Velator on 29th

All three birds spotted at low tide near the boats at Velator Quay - pic of Water Pipit not one of my best, but fairly sure my ID is correct.

Sherpa

Got down to go into the reserve to find 5 vehicles blocking the track and a ffine collection of green-clad merry men enjoying a drink before heading down to the marsh to blast a few things out of the sky. Before they got there I did see a MARSH HARRIER, which I hope had the sense to fly off. Only 14 shots were loosed off, indicating a pretty small number of birds about, and considering the number of guns (at least 10). One of the jolly men went around the perimeter of the reserve with a bird-scaring type device, which I am glad to report didn't work at all!

Female Great-spotted Woodpecker in the reserve.

Dartington to Broadhempston

No sign of the Ibis at the given map references but heard a call that may have been the bird in the cover behind the Broadhempston treatment works. Trumpeting type call, louder and more strident then the Moorhen that was calling near by.

A count of 11 Snipe at location, several large flocks of Redwing in the Staverton / Broadhempston / Landscove area and one mixed flock of Starling and Fieldfare

Raven seen and heard several times, female Merganser flew up the Rv Dart from Staverton Bridge

Female Sparrow hawk seen near landscove and two sightings of female Kestrel on outskirts of Dartington.

Sunday 29th December 2013

Burrator reservoir.

The female Ring necked Duck still here today on the northern shore opposite Longstone Manor. Could be tricky to see under the overhanging branches. Still with Mallards in the absence of Tufties!

A pair of Goosander also here as well as at least seven Mandarins and around ten Teal.

Later in the day at Devils Point, Plymouth I counted at least twelve Med Gulls among the eight hundred odd Black heads heading to roost. Mostly first winters but two adults were seen. Very difficult to I.D. in the fading light, but I think there were a few more Meds here. The surprise guest was the first winter Kittiwake among a Black head flock.

Shoalstone late PM

Returned to scope a bird spotted earlier in the day with binos to confirm my thoughts, nothing very exciting though, just  another black guillemot!!!!!! Seemed to prefer the area 80yds off the flagpole. So thats at least 3 in the bay now.

Managed to get a little more excited when a search of gulls around a day trawler gutting fish threw up a cracking Iceland gull that on occasion was sat on the gunnels of the boat.

Exminster Marshes

Very flooded still so walking or driving along the road to fishermans car park not possible. A soggy welly-walk along the path around the marsh in the glorious sunshine produced large amounts of wigeon, teal, curlew, lapwing and canadas. A female marsh harrier passed over putting all the birds up. Also nice to see two sparrowhawks, redwing and fieldfares, a pintail, a pair of stonechats, skylarks over in Powderham, a few goldcrests. A great morning.

Clennon Valley

After not seeing the Cattle Egret since the evening of 25th Dec I checked the roosting tree on the eastern pond - both Grey Heron and Little Egret still in tree but no Cattle Egret. I then found scattered pure white feathers (some of the larger feathers collected and photographed here) on the playing field close to where the Cattle Egret regulary fed, they would appear to fit Cattle Egret very well - presumably killed by something or at least scared enough push the egret off!

White-billed Diver - Brixham

Decided to walk off turkey and all the trimmings with a stroll along Brixham breakwater late afternoon. I was already aware of the growing number of Diver species in Torbay and checking a large diver within the outer harbour I was immediately stunned by the ivory coloured large bill! Finding it difficult to speak Sue my partner agreed to return to the car to get the camera! (THANK YOU).  I watched the bird from about halfway along the breakwater, looking west back across the outer harbour towards Astra Zeneca, feeding 50m from the breakwater. In fading light I managed to grab some record shots, but remained cautious about phoning out the news until I had double checked the ID and what a Christmas present! It was already dark and just hope the bird sticks, gutted I couldn't get anyone else to share the experience.

Hope's Nose this morning

The black guillemot was back close off the rocks at the quarry till 10am, after which it disappeared. Also in the cove on the north side, 6 great northern divers and a red throated diver (a 1st winter with grey neck: a different bird from yesterday's). A gull flock was still at the sewer, but nothing notable. I'll try & post photos later.

Brixham Garden

Having moved to Brixham from Bedfordshire over the weekend, birding has been confined to the garden so far.... On Monday morning a Blackcap was calling from the ivy in the back garden but at about midday today a Firecrest moved, rather rapidly, through our front garden! Not a bad start to the garden list!

Hope's Nose this afternoon

A 1st winter black guillemot was in the cove on the north side. This disappeared moments after it was pointed out to us (at 13.23pm) and could not be relocated. The record photos attached show an unusual heavy dark bar on the wing coverts - would be worth close scrutiny if it can be refound.

Also present: 7 great northern, 1 black throated and 1 red throated diver in the cove, and an adult mediterranean gull was at the sewer with commoner species.

White fronted Goose ?

During a quick visit to Exeter marshes on Sunday morning I think I found a single White fronted Goose amongst the Brents and Canada's (orange legs, pink bill and a white patch above)??? I did get a couple of photo's via digi scoping though not the best due to the distance and no thanks to the couple who walked straight through the middle of the marsh, sending 1000s of birds skyward and wondering why they couldnt see anything through their bino's...

Can any one confirm my picture and its presence???

Eds: Mark there was not a picture attached??

Clennon Valley, Paignton

A mid morning walk round Clennon Valley, Paignton failed to spot the Cattle Egret, but a good variety of duck species on the ponds inc a drake Shoveller, good numbers of Mallard and Tufted, good numbers of Little Grebe dotted about and a count of 7 Snipe against one of the bankside reed beds, on the playing fields a Common gull amoungst the Black Headed Gulls

Velator Reserve

Very wet. Lots of Finches today - probably more than 100 Greenfinch! The Little Grebe is still present, hiding under the duckweed mainly! Also 2 Chiffchaffs, one of which looked like a good Tristis-type and I was just trying to get better sustained views when it flew off and I couldn't relocate it. Grrrr. Had a look at the other one which was a much more typical Collybita-type, greeny/yellowy wash. Will keep looking over the Christmas period to see if I can get better views. No sign of the Whooper Swans over on the great field, or of any Marsh Harriers over the reed-bed.
