Rillage Point & Widmouth Head

A late post for yesterday, Tue 29 Sep:

I spent the mainly sunny and almost windless morning (06.55 to 11.50) monitoring visible/audible migration, mainly of passerines, and looking landwards for much of the time. If the albatross seen at 08.30 off Hurlstone Pt (Somerset), about 35km E of Widmouth Hd, flew past me within range of eyes or optics, I missed it! It was nevertheless an excellent morning. A ringtail Hen Harrier flew steadily due W and quite high up, well out over the Bristol Channel at 10.35 – I lost it to scope view at 50x with Lundy in the same field of view. Much more surprising was a first-winter Iceland Gull that flew E (interspersed with a steady eastbound stream of mainly first-winter Herring Gulls) at 11.30.

A pulse of Swallow migration off the sea at 08.30 was followed by much more sustained southbound passage from 11.00 onwards; total = 198. Also 9 Skylark, 3 alba wagtails, 63 Meadow Pipit, 27 Chaffinch, 44 Linnet, 31 Goldfinch and 5 Siskin. Few grounded night migrants in the scrub, just 1 Chiffchaff, 3 Goldcrest & 3 Song Thrush. Other apparently dispersing/migrant birds included single Grey Heron, Great Spotted Woodpecker & Coal Tit.

Very quiet around the reserve on Sunday, a lone peregrine using a pylon as a lookout post on the far side of the railway track. At the end of the walk heading back to the car park from the canal , thrilled to see a female marsh harrier hunting over the reed beds and fields, disturbing a startled heron, as she dropped into the reeds momentarily.

From my WeBS sector this morning on the Taw Estuary (Chivenor foreshore, Caen mouth, Sherpa Marsh): at least 1 probably 2 Great White Egrets, a Cattle Egret, an Osprey eating a fish on one of the old barns at Horsey Island, 9 Pale-bellied Brent Geese (given the recent NE winds, more likely to be overshoots from the Svalbard population, rather than from the Canadian High Arctic population), 7 Pintail, very good numbers of Wigeon for this early stage of the autumn, and 26 Mediterranean Gulls. Also 3 Whinchats and 4 Stonechats perched in a single hawthorn and steady overhead southbound passage of Skylarks, Meadow Pipits and Swallows.

The Firecrest was in a large holly bush. A good number of the Firecrests I’ve seen in Devon have been in holly....they obviously like it in there!

Lunchtime 1 or 2 Great Skuas were loitering close to feeding Porpoise, they then broke up a flock of 100 Black headed gulls and predated one of them. There seems to be a lot of Great BBgulls taken up residence, regularly numbers up to 30, at least 2 with red Davic rings. 2 Black Redstarts have arrived along the Landmark car park seen bickering with Rock Pipits and Robins.

I checked through the Gulls at Barnstaple Old Bridge, I found 2 ringed Black headed Gulls. One from Hiddensee German western Baltic the other from Meriden west midlands.

Bench Tor and Venford Reservoir

early pm: 1 ad Hobby circled low over the Tor before heading off SE down the valley. An impressive movement of House Martins too with one flock of c250 heading high SE and then an hour or so later an amazing 750 or so low over the Reservoir in a tight flock bathing and drinking for a few minutes before also gaining height and dispersing off southwards.

Berry Head 07:30 - 09:30

An early morning visit to Berry Head in calm conditions produced some movement of birds. A single White Wagtail and Siskin flew over and 2 Coal Tits showing characteristics of the continental subspecies dropped in briefly behind the sea watching area and fed amongst the rocks before moving back further into the quarry and lost to view. Also amongst the bushes were 15 Chiffchaff.

Out to sea: 263 Kittiwake, 55 Gannet, 52 Manx Shearwater, 13 Guillemot, 2 Sandwich Tern and 3 Common Scoter.

Saltram

midday visit to saltram, to my dismay at the meadows 3 people had jumped the gate to the site and had fishing gear and was set up at the meadows, which is a no public acess area. With them wandering around on top many birds at the edges were scared off. Informed Saltram at their visitor centre but doubt anything will happen as no rangers work weekends

Velator reserve and the river Caen.

From the bridge to the reserve field, both Kingfisher and Dipper flew off downstream. Walked the riverbank as far as the lighting gantry. 4/5 Wheatears, 60+ Dunlin, and just when I started giving them a good grilling they all (and all the BH Gulls) went up. Quickly found why: a female Peregrine flew menacingly off towards the main estuary. As I turned to follow in that direction, another Peregrine (male this time) took off from somewhere behind me and did a couple of circuits (of me!) before heading west towards Braunton Burrows. A  family(?) party of 5 Stonechats. 2 Redshank not far south of Marstage Farm. Still several hundred Canada Geese. In the reserve another - or the same - Kingfisher. South of the reserve 2 Cattle Egrets with the cows. One Black-tailed Godwit on the scrape.

At 1310 a Red Kite appeared from the NW over Blindwell Wood.  It then soared for several minutes over Whittacliffe Wood, before gaining height and continuing down the estuary.  After some half-hearted sparring with a Buzzard, it drifted off eastwards near Blaxton Wood about 1325.

Informed today by a dog walker of a Stork in a tree, i was fully expecting a Grey Heron, but it turned out to be a White stork! Perched in the treetops just off Lakeside drive, (opposite Digby Grove.) Watched for an hour, it did a quick circular and perched back in the same tree. Leg ring GB4H on left leg.

Also, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, and a Goldcrest attracted by a cloud of flies in a tree.

White Stork Lopwell

Was sat watching a kingfisher, turned and looked to see a bird drift up river thought I'd get some practice in as I've been fiddling with camera settings and focusing on moving birds.  I assumed it was a heron, but as I tried focusing once it was overhead, I knew it was not a heron, and as I've seen reports of storks in Cornwall, I automatically thought this was what was flying overhead.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Velator reserve and the Caen river

At the scrape I met a man who had been shown an Osprey at the river-mouth yesterday evening. So after a quick check around the reserve, I went there. On the way 4 Whimbrel, about 20 Curlew, 1 Greenshank, 1 Common Sandpiper 3 Kestrels, 2 Buzzards, several each of Meadow Pipit, Goldfinch, Stonechat, and 2 Wheatears. Over on one of the falling down barns in Horsey, a bird of prey, but extreme distance made id difficult. Eventually took extreme range photo and found I had been staring not at an Osprey, but a Peregrine Falcon.... On the way back 2 Black-tailed Godwits with the loafing Gull flock by Sherpa main pond. In the reserve, a Tawny Owl. 2 Little Egrets on the scrape.

A Great Black Backed Gull tackled a crab...and won. A Cormorant was drying its wings on the mud bank and there were scattered BH Gulls throughout, maybe 25 in total.
