I think I discovered some similar characters to yours a couple of weeks back. Digging out my old copy of Chinery's field guide to the Insects of Britain (c.1976) made me think they were Buff-tip caterpillars (Phalera bucephalus). They were new to me, and my photos are from August 10th in Holcombe. Anyone else able to confirm? Thanks
