Braunton Burrows passage migrant sighting

A walk on the Braunton Burrows produced a first for us in the UK. Approaching one of the larger of the ponds to the north of J lane we inadvertently flushed a Green Sandpiper from cover near the waters edge. It called as it jinked and climbed with a sort of pweeit repeated often and disappeared to the north. About twenty minutes later we flushed the unfortunate bird (or another?) again, this time at the margins of nothing more than a large puddle. Nothing more than a grainy image, which I won't bother uploading, as it flew off but the white rump & dark tail edge are clearly visible. As per Collins...first impression was of a large house martin.

Dawlish Warren - Exeter

A multi-stop day (with bins. only) produced:

- from the sea-wall, 2 Manx Shearwaters and a steady stream of Gannets, Kittewakes and Sandwich Terns;

- from Starcross, a Med. Gull and the first G-C Grebe of the Autumn in the estuary, 200+ Turnstones roosting on the breakwater, and many more Sandwich Terns, making probably 100+ for the day;

- no Cattle Egrets at Matford/Countesswear, but instead a Yellow Wagtail with the sheep in the Alphinbrook flood channel.

Going back a few days, there was a fresh brood of 5 Mallard ducklings in the Trews Weir flood channel. I thought they would stand little chance, and next day, for the first time, counted the gulls loafing around: total 1100+, 39:1 Herring to LBB, and, unsurprisingly, no ducklings. With others in the city, 1500+ reported from the lower estuary and usually 500+ at Budleigh, is the East Devon Herring Gull meta-population of national importance? New conservation designation needed?

Thornhillhead, North Devon

The male sparrowhawk that regularly visits our garden around the feeders has become aware of a second brood of swallows in the garage roof space. It has now taken to sitting inside the garage presumably waiting for an incoming parent rather than directly predating the nest which is tucked away high up? Its virtually invisible when in there and although I have disturbed it a number of times, the frequency of visit appears to be increasing and I think it can only be a matter of time before a successful strike!

Avon Dam

Like most birds on migration, Sedge Warblers are scarcer inland than on the coast, or just harder to find, so I was pleased with two at Long-a-Traw, below the Avon Dam, two days ago and another there this morning. These are the first here since 2017, though I suspect annual as they occurred in  each of the three years before that. Scarce on Dartmoor, with no records in 2018 and only two in 2019 unless the ringers caught some. Also single brownhead Goosander roosting on the reservoir (out at 0620), two imm Cormorants on the dam parapet and a Pied Fly above Shipley.

Velator reserve

Always encouraging to hear a Tawny Owl, as I did when trying (and actually catching 2) to catch Swallows the other evening. Even better to see one in daylight as I did this morning, it flew off at my approach but a short while later flew out and over the pond then up over the Willow trees, which must be 40 feet high by now. Being chased off by a couple of small birds - not sure if it had caught one as it was a pretty short sighting. A large foraging party of Tits roving around - mostly juvenile Blue Tits. Also saw the first Squirrel for a very long time....

News of foreign recovery.

Reed Warbler S201706 ringed as a 3J (so hatched that year) at Velator in July 2016 and retrapped in Cordoba Spain in July 2019. I've been to Cordoba in August - it gets really hot there in the summer. Reed Warbler numbers have been falling over the years - perhaps they all prefer a hotter climate.

Stover

Ten Mandarins, a family of Great Crested Grebes and multiple sightings of Kingfishers today were eclipsed (for me) by 2 separate male Lesser Emperors, 1 over the main lake and 1 (photograph) at one of the sedimentation ponds. The latter was found during a systematic survey of the no-go areas created last year.  There were also lots of Small Red-eyed Damselflies mating and egg-laying on the main lake, plus Long-winged Coneheads (a bush-cricket) near the hide, at least one Clouded Yellow, Brimstone and a few Silver-washed Fritillaries.

Thanks to Andy for posting my message re the Cattle Egret, which I didn't see again. I was there to catch Swallows, but none obliged tonight. At 20.52 all the Gulls in the surrounding field, which had been feeding happily, suddenly took off and  made a right din. I looked out at the scrape and the Spoonbill circled few times and then landed. Often wondered what sort of time it turned up.
