Barred grass snake, Natrix helvetica

Anyone who has read with interest the "discovery of a fourth species of  snake" in Britain, as reported by the BBC and press, might be interested to look at the original paper, available at:

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-07847-9

The paper concludes that the grass snakes in Britain do indeed belong to the new species, barred grass snake Natrix helvetica (previously thought to be a subspecies of grass snake Natrix natrix). However, Natrix natrix does not occur in Britain (apart from a few escapes of imported individuals of continental origin). So we still have only three native species of snake in Britain.
