Prawle Point and area

Seawatching this morning from 6am (John L.) and myself ( from 6.50 ) till 9.30am . Sea calm at first with very little breeze .  Manx Shearwaters mainly flying west -at least 750 –and 400 east but also feeding parties on the sea. Also  7 Balearic Shearwaters and on leaving a Bonxie flew west. Another good day for Med Gulls with 20 seen flying west when not sitting on the sea, all but one 1cy and one adult wp. 8 Common Scoter west. And at least 50 Common Dolphins far out but some breaching fully plus  spectacular aerobatics.

As for passerines a sprinkle but good range of migrants today included : 20+ Yellow Wagtails and 1 Wheatear at the hump; 2 Spotted Flycatchers , 1 Garden Warbler , 6 Blackcaps, 6 Whitethroats, similar numbers of Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers at Bunkers and towards Langerstone.

Elsewhere at Prawle : a further 10 Spotted Flycathers, 1 fem Pied Flycatcher, a fem Redstart, 20 mixed phylloscs,, 2 Sparrowhawks, 5 Sand Martins.  So a good day even though I couldn’t turn my last bird ,heard and seen for a second , into more than a probable gropper !
