Exe estuary near Turf

Yesterday evening just before high water (9.00 pm) over 300 curlew flew onto the marshes accompanied by a few bar-tailed godwits. 39 sandwich terns flew north up the estuary, calling loudly. Other birds displaced by the rising tide included 2 dunlin.

A 100 or so swallows were over the canal with c50 house martins and 2 swifts. Earlier in the evening I saw a juv sparrowhawk try to kill an adult magpie. Much noise. Eventually the birds fell out of the tree and landed near me. That was too much for the sparrowhawk. It gave up and flew away. The magpie moved into dense cover. A peregrine, sat on a pylon, watched the whole episode intently.
