Hay Tor - Blackslade Ford (west of Cold East Cross), Dartmoor.

11 members of DB (East Branch) met at Hay Tor car park at 10.00hrs and quickly found many family groups of young birds, including Greenfinch, Stonechat and Linnet with other juveniles of Pied Wagtail, Crow and Starling.  The quarry produced brief sightings of Redstart with other species - Willow Warbler, Pied Wagtail (with food) and other more common birds - Blackbird, Robin etc).  Good numbers of Wheatear, mainly young birds, were conspicuos outside the quarry plus 2 MIstle Thrush, Meadow Pipits, Linnets and Yellow Hammers.  Numbers of House Martin were feeding and probably nesting at the hotel.

Moving on to the Cold East Cross area for lunch the group then walked up the valley to Blackslade Ford.  The small woodland produced Coal Tit, Bullfinch,  3 Siskin, Tree Creeper, 2 Goldcrest, Willow Warbler and at the ford a good view of a young Redstart and a distant Kestrel and 2 Raven.

After the group dispersed mid afternoon, I carried on to show Ian and Fay the area near the rifle butts at Halshanger Common and we added a family of Whitethroat to the days list.
