Black Hole Marsh

Here's a ropey pic of the Pectoral Sandpiper which stayed pretty distant but easily viewable from Island Hide. However, a Sparrowhawk flushed everything in the evening and was seen with a kill, the Pec hasn't been seen since...

Frustrated Herring Gull?

For the last couple of weeks a Herring Gull has taken to standing on my study roof and pecking at a bedroom window. I assume this is territorial behaviour, and that it's pecking at its reflection. It's perhaps late in the season for this sort of behaviour, so maybe it's frustration - it's presumed to be one of a non-breeding pair that has been around here for years (a neighbour feeds them daily on his garage roof!). It has made quite a mess of the window and sometimes gives us a wake up call rather early!

Monday 29th July 2013

Start Point

Seawatch 15:00-17:30. Off Start Pt an ongoing shearwater feeding frenzy involved at least 40 Balearics in with c200 Manx, with birds arriving and moving on all the time (some doubling back) making a true count impossible. Also 2+ juv Yellow-legged Gulls and a juv Mediterranean Gull.

The Balearic Shearwaters seem to have crossed the channel in increasing numbers following the favourable winds of the last few days. Given Prawle's numbers in the morning and the large gap between observations a 3 figure total could have passed today!

Prawle Point

Seawatch from 6am to 10.30am in south-west 4-5, gusting to 6, produced 38  Balearic Shearwaters  flying west : variable plumage with some good contenders for Sooty but alas no large shearwaters seen today. Also 2 Puffins, 210 Gannets, 11 Sandwich Terns, 33 Kittiwakes , 1 Whimbrel and 1 Med Gull best of the rest. 2 Swifts over the point. Prawle (yesterday, 27/7)

Seawatch from 06.00 - 08.00; 14 Balearic and 300 Manx Shearwaters, 255 Gannets, 8 Common Scoters and 2 Med Gulls. Waders on the beach; Curlew, 3 Whimbrel, 4 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, Sanderling, Common Sandpiper.  Migrant passerines included Wheatear, Sedge Warbler and 2 Willow Warblers, along with a  dispersing juvenile Green Woodpecker. In the air, just 3 Sand Martins and a single Swift. (16 on 26/7).

Quick analysis of my breeding survey show 47 species this year (confirmed or probable), down from 49 last year. Losses were Shelduck, Pied Wagtail, Wheatear and Spotted Flycatcher, while gains were Raven and Coal Tit. While the numbers of most species appear to be down, success rates look to be very good.

Finally Butterflies; Great to see so many this year, (15 species yesterday), with whole fields covered in Large Whites and hedgerows dancing with Gatekeepers. Just like the good old days when I were a lad!

20nm south of Start Point

Out on a fishing boat 20nm S of Start Point, at times foggy conditions. Good numbers of Manx Shearwaters seen from about 10nm out. Attracted to the boat were 5 juvenile Yellow-legged Gulls in with c200 mainly Herring and Lesser Black-backed gulls with a few juveniles of both these species also now out to sea. Also 4 European Storm-petrels (would normally expect more this time of year!) and 3 Bonxies.

At present records like these are not considered part of Devon as beyond 5nm, see http://forum.devonbirds.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9 ,this is a great shame, with the potential of pelagic trips off the county, however the data can be sent to Marinelife http://marinelife-charm3.blogspot.co.uk/.
