Friday 26th June 2015

Challacombe Farm, Dartmoor.

11 members  of DB (East Devon Branch) spent the morning around the farm where a total of 40 species were listed.  Noticeable were the absence of Flycatchers.  A Garden Warbler was singing from the bushes along the road with a nice male Siskin perching briefly on the road fence.  A Redstart or two were present at the start, seen by a few but not again during the day.  The valley towards Headland Warren produced several Whinchat and a family of Wheatear on the road side.  After lunch the group walked over the Down towards Golden Dagger MIne where a Green Woodpecker appeared briefly plus more Wheatear, a  GT Spotted Woodpecker and several Tree Pipit. The weather presented intermittent light showers with the worse towards the middle of the afternoon. An enjoyable day in good company.

I sat for two hours beside the hedge to be rewarded with  the attached photo. Hope this of interest to you.

spotted flycatcher pair bonding with painted lady!

From the carpark of the Sportsman's Inn on the Devon/Somerset border I was watching a pair of spotted flycatchers darting out from the beech hedge pursuing insects; suddenly the male caught a painted lady butterfly, returned to its regular perch and presented it to his partner. With an expected painted lady invasion lets hope it was to her taste!...

Pair of Red Kites, Brisworthy, Dartmoor

Driving my car I spotted a pair of Red Kites at Brisworthy, South Dartmoor (Meavy area).  First time I've ever seen them. Parked up quickly, grabbed camera and managed a few shots as they wheeled around - disappearing and reappearing. Not great photos - wrong lens, so had to blow these up, but OK for identification purposes. Amazing sight!

Red Kite, Cuckoos and more,South Brent - 10.6.15

1000-1500 Sunny but cold E Wind. Parked car where yesterday I had seen 2 Whitethroat feeding 2,possibly 3, well fledged youngsters. No sign today. Walked out onto open moor, first notable sighting a group of 18 Mistle Thrush ,later saw another 2. At about 11.30 am, whilst watching a kestrel ,saw a high flying red kite come off the moor heading South East towards Buckfast. At about 12 noon two cuckoos began calling near the Harbourne River. Both later seen and one poorly photographed. Also saw amongst other birds, 4 reed bunting, a whinchat2 yellowhammer at that location. Quite a few meadow pipits, a couple of linnets and strangely just one stonechat seen on the way back, when I saw another 2 Yellowhammer in a different location. A feature of a good day was the numbers of wood pigeon all flying east in small groups of 5 -12.Well over 100 birds in total. A couple of common blues in a sheltered spot,, as I left were the icing on the cake!

Nightjars in Cann Woods

A group of about twenty from the Plymouth Local Branch enjoyed a late night foray into Cann Woods at Plympton.  Despite slightly less than perfect conditions, it was a little overcast and the moon had not yet risen, the group had good if brief views of at least 4 Nightjars, with a total of 10 heard churring, ke-wiking, gurgling or wing-clapping throughout the wood.  A Cuckoo was heard calling near the fort.

Dartmoor & Teigngrace

A run around Dartmoor this morning above the Caton / Ashburton area, bit of a cooling wind but plenty of small birds to be seen including Yellowhammers, Stonechat, Meadow Pipits, Linnets, Goldfinch, Skylarks, Wren and Mistle Thrush, reasonable numbers of Buzzards most of which were using the winds to “hang on the air” to hunt.

Back home at South Brent two visits to the garden feeders from a pair of Siskins. A hunting male Sparrow Hawk and count of 149 Herring Gulls passing by this morning between 8am and 9.30am at one point several gulls mobbed a passing Grey Heron.

An evening visit to Teigngrace to photograph the Sand Martins, good numbers present along with a couple of Swifts and one passing male Sparrow hawk. A Pied Wagtail feeding one youngster.

Tuesday 2nd June 2015

South Brent

Awful weather this morning had the gardens feeders buzzing with feeding birds, very surprised to see a male Bullfinch coming in, the weather brought in far more birds than would be usual for this time of year.

The Wood pigeon movement mentioned in an early post continued once the weather began to lift with a count of 213 Woodies, 3 Stock Dove and one feral pigeon passing over.

The resident Buzzards may have a successful nest this season, the male was seen passing by mobbed by Crows as he carried a largish prey item to the nest site, a total of four Buzzards today included a very pale almost white male seen to fly past into the strong winds.

Four Raven overhead this morning

The day has seen an almost constant movement of Herring Gulls passing by the house, a total of four Greater Black Backed Gulls which included one juvenile.

Juvenile birds around the feeders and garden included, Robin, House Sparrows, Coal Tits, Greenfinch, Rooks, Magpies.

A pair of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers in at one point, then regular visits from the male to the feeders

Of interest in the reserve, there were about  20 House Martins and 10 Swallows hawking insects over the reserve pond - never seen them in there before! Must be the lovely weather.... Or perhaps because it was sheltered from the wind.
