Thornhillhead, N.Devon

Interesting apparent miscalculation by male Sparrowhawk, who initially flew at a Grey Squirrel under feeders in our garden. Pretty sure this is same bird that frequently uses an ambush tactic of sitting in a hedge then pouncing. This time the bird was one side of a tree with the squirrel at the other, about 8 feet away. After initially swooping around the trunk with intent, the Sparrowhawk seemed to quickly decide it wasn't a good idea and landed on a wall close by. The squirrel jumped but didn't run, then carried on feeding. The Sparrowhawk composed itself before flying up the garden hedge where it regularly sits and waits, typically this is quite close to the ground.
