River Dart, Dartington

Steve Waite's tip-off regarding a "small streaked heron" seen twice today arrived just in time for my 11 year old daughter and I to get there at 20.00 with 30 minutes of daylight remaining. The dense mature willows lining both banks of the river Dart made Night-heron the obvious candidate. One last patrol along the bank (now with the torch) at 20.45 suddenly produced an adult night-heron flying in over the river at tree-top height. It banked and flew back downriver appearing to drop to the river. More scanning in near darkness failed to relocate it. Emily blasted off some shots with my camera as I watched it fly in noting plain pale grey underparts and possibly a snippet of black crown. She did well I think in near darkness.

Thanks Steve for the gen.
