around the exe

Once the early morning showers had eased started at the Exeter st David’s end of the flood relief channel, 1 dipper , lots of redwings and fieldfares, 1 sparrowhawk put up 12 meadow pipits, then as I got to the mill on the exe a group of 10 lapwing flew over and with them were 3 golden plover, both new birds on patch.

walking along the river between the quay and countess wear produced more fieldfares and redwings.

along the canal between the swing bridge and the motorway bridge , 12+ siskins, 2 Cetti’s warblers 600+ fieldfares and 400+ redwings.

then between the motorway bridge and the ferry landing on the canal at Exminster marshes, 2 red breasted mergansers, a coot and with them a small grebe asleep sure it was black necked grebe eventually it woke up and showed down to a few meters confining it was a black necked grebe only my second on the marsh , 1 ruff was with masses of lapwing near the motorway bridge.

on the walk home a woodcock flew across the flood relief channel between trews weir and salmon pool to end a good days birding
