Haldon Crossbills

I checked the Mamhead area - only a mile or so away from the Ideford site. No sign of the Two-barred Crossbill but did get some great views of 40-50 Common Crossbills mostly feeding beside a footpath with other birds moving around the area. Directions.. 200m W of the main Mamhead car park and SW down a track with a grassy bank built infront of it. Walk 400-500m and the birds were feeding in smallish pines (with long grass growing under them), either side of the track.

Just out of interest I picked up this chunky looking Crossbill that chased off a Common Crosbill it did look big billed with a swollen lower mandible. I watched it briefly in the tree just afterward went for the camera but it flew off - no call.
