Exminster Marshes - Early Afternoon

tristis Chiffchaff calling in the car park and good views. Good numbers of Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Avocet, Curlew and 18 Gadwall along with the more usual.  On the way back from the Turf, a flock of 22 Fieldfare overhead and Redwings on the "haws" in the  hawthorns. Quite a few Goldcrest calling. But then we caught sight of a small swift, falcon towards the M5 flyover, it landed on a telegraph pole about 300m from the road. Stunning male Merlin which we watched for a good time - best views I have ever had of a Merlin. All in all a brilliant birding afternoon!
