Whinchat or Stonechat first Winter? Otter Estuary

Ottery Estuary 29th 15:30

A pleasent stroll along the the estuary this afternoon produced the normal 50+ Widgeon, 20+ Teal, a nice brace of Snipe and a single Redshank.

What took my eye was a female Stonechat and what i first thought was a female Whinchat, however looking at Collins Guide I'm not so sure...any thoughts? Great to see both birds anyway...

Derek - there are two different birds here the top is a Stonechat - it looks pale, I even considered Siberian Stonechat but I think the photo is a little over exposed making it paler than reality. See the length of the primary tips to your photo of the Whinchat photo below (the Whinchat primaries extend beyond the end of the uppertail coverts). Tthe supercilium is also huge on the Whinchat.
