Exe, Powderham to Turf

The most impressive sighting during this morning's WeBS count was a loose flock of over 40 red-breasted mergansers in mid-channel. On the fields next to the sea-wall were 3 or 4 stonechats, 1 kingfisher, 10 redwings, 2 song thrushes and a few meadow pipits. On the mud 55 avocets were feeding in a tight group before flying off, towards the Clyst. On the fields on the far side of the railway were a mixed flock of 58 golden plover, 47 lapwing, 25 dunlin and 45 curlew.
