Exe Estuary

Late morning visit to Exminster Marsh in sun-shine; from 11.00 to about 12.30. Lots of birds spread out over the wet fields. Two large flocks of brent geese, one to the north of the lane (c300) , the other near Turf (c500). I did not count the wigeon, teal or shoveller. On the lagoon 12  gadwall, 10+ tufted duck, 10 pochard and a single male goldeneye.

The lapwing were difficult to count and I estimated c500. With them c50 golden plover and 3 grey plover. Dunlin (c600) flew in flocks to the estuary as the tide dropped. Also c100 curlew, 2 bar-tailed godwit and one black-tailed godwit.

On the canal one little grebe and on the canal bank 2 bullfinch and one goldcrest, and there was another goldcrest in the lane with two chiffchaffs.

In the afternoon at 15.00 went out on the estuary in a boat. Avocet numbers good but they were well spread out. 4 turnstone plus the usual waders including a flock of c200 bar-tailed godwits. 7 red-breasted mergansers and 3 cormorants were the only birds on the water.
