Bowling green marsh

Watched from 13:15 till 18:00

had a call from mark baker about 2 red crested pochard on the marsh and on arrival the male and female were viewable in the channel to the left of the hide and remained in view all afternoon, good numbers of duck had arrived over night with a cracking male goldeneye showing well, 4+ gadwall, 8+ pochard, 4+ tufted duck, 146+ wigeon, 6+ shoveler, the juv ruff was viewable early afternoon but not seen after a peregrine caused havoc, also 1 sparrowhawk, 2 kestrel, 5+ buzzard, 140+ dunlin, 29+ Bar tailed godwits still very good numbers of black tailed godwits, 3 greenshank, 230+ redshank, 5+ snipe, 5+ little grebe, 2 Cetti's warblers, 12 Brent geese including 1 juv, 10+ knot, 1 grey plover, 500+ starling went to roost in the reeds on far side from the hide.

A quick look around the viewing platform before leaving was rewarded with a close encounter with a female merlin flying right over my head a great way to end the day.
