Exe Estuary, Turf to Powderham

During the WeBS count, between 1.25 and 2.25pm, most of the brent geese formed one flock of 1100 birds in the fields inland of the railway with more geese on the estuary. In total there were probably 1200 brent geese south of the Turf. The distance and abundance of birds made it difficult to see if the black brant was amongst them. If it was I failed to locate it.

On the shore small groups of dunlin were feeding close to the sea wall together with about 100 black-tailed godwit. In the estuary one flock of 14 red-breasted merganser was south of Greenland Bank.

Walking back across Exminster Marshes it appeared the number of wigeon had fallen although there were plenty (600+) lapwing and 100 or so golden plover. I saw 2 chiffchaffs in the lane and heard 3 Cettis. There was a kingfisher on the canal.

James Diamond reported the merlin coming into roost later in the afternoon about 5.30pm.
