A day of surprises

Whilst not in the same league as finding a Little Crake today has been quite interesting.

Upottery Airfield, Smeatharpe - this evening. A big surprise to get the first sighting of Little Owl this year, followed by the sites 2nd record of Reed Bunting and an incredible 14 Whinchats including a party of 9 that flew in whilst i was watching the Little Owl. Supporting cast of 8 Wheatear, Whitethroat and Chiffchaff. Clouded yellow also present.

Earlier in the day (around 11 a.m.) whilst treating her indoors to a coffee and cake at Budleigh seafront, unexpectedly a Sooty Shearwater came out of the mist close in and disappeared west towards Straight Point.

Re Andy's posting yesterday regarding Hummingbird Hawk Moths, it has been a very good year for them - i have had them at least 20 days this summer with occasionally 2 together in the garden (i live up in the Blackdowns). Portland has reported up to a 100 in a day - the Obs site is worth a visit. Valerian and Verbena seem to be favourite nectar plants.
