River Caen/Taw Estuary 19.00–21.30 21st July

An evening visit revealed at least 66 Mediterranean Gulls (possibly quite a lot more as we left the main gathering area before dusk) bathing in the Caen and/or flighting in to roost on flats off the mouth of the Caen. Two colour-ringed birds: one 2nd-summer with white ring on right leg (black inscription 956), the other an adult with a green ring on the left leg (white inscription; only leading "R" 100% certain, rest 75% before the bird flew off: R9UT). Also 11 Greenshanks on Horsey Island, about 20 Curlews, 7 Common Sandpipers and a smattering of Dunlins and Ringed Plovers. Couple of hundred Swallows and Sand Martins gathering to roost in Sherpa reedbeds and 40 Swifts over the Great Field. Barn Owl hunting over Chivenor.
