Extreme NE Devon, east of Foreland Point

A 10km circular walk taking in part of the SW Coast Path near County Gate brought 8 singing Common Redstarts, 4 singing Wood Warblers, a skulking Grasshopper Warbler above Glenthorne, a migrating Red Kite (which we reckoned to be an immature) heading E, and – unusually for this stretch of precipitous coastline – two Shelducks offshore. Also an abundance of Blackcaps (probably 50+ singing birds, let alone the others only calling or glimpsed), smaller numbers of Willow Warblers and Chiffchaffs and one Common Whitethroat. Small flocks of Swallows and House Martins heading into the easterly wind along the clifftops, flying just above similar-sized groups of migrating Lesser Black-backed Gulls also passing up-channel.
