So pleased to see Liz's post as whilst removing garage guttering I,too, saw 2 Swallows flying west past Woodford at c 1.30pm. Apparently earliest reference  to this saying is attributed to Aristotle  (in 4th century before the common era ) :"One swallow does not a summer make, nor one fine day; similarly one day or brief time of happiness does not make a person entirely " according to wikipedia.
