Otter Estuary and valley

A pair of Mute Swan were displaying before they mated and then presented each other with a posy of weed... what a delight!  This took place in a ditch up the valley where I counted 20+ Chiffchaffs, (evidently a spring influx). Singles of Fieldfare, Goldcrest, Long tailed Tit and a pair of Reed Bunting also present.

On the estuary the main interest was on the Cricket Pitch where a male Black Redstart, 1 Wheatear, 36 Dunlin (unusually high numbers here), 1 Spotted Redshank, 1 Redwing, 1 Stonechat and a pair of Song Thrush were seen by a number of observers.  A large flock of Meadow Pipit were mobile in the water logged fields and a Green Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker heard.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) the East Devon Branch have a fieldtrip here so hopefully the birds will stay around.
