Merlin at Darts Farm

A great start to the weekend with excellent views of a Merlin hunting over the stubble field at Darts Farm (8.50am). I was made aware of its presence by a number of contact calls coming from a group of Skylarks. This is the first bird I’ve seen above the horizon and my initial thought was of a Mistle thrush or Fieldfare but as it picked up pace and went into a dive shooting across the field I soon realised what I was looking at. The bird gained height over the warehouses in the boatyard and turned round making another attempt at a kill speeding towards the feeders at the bottom of the track. Once below the horizon I lost the bird so unaware if successful.

Other birds included a large flock of Brent Geese, a hand full of Curlew. Lapwing and Black-Tailed Godwits, Golden Plover, Fieldfare and Redwing also on site
