Haldon Forest

Feeling a bit outdone by the plethora of Hawfinch records around the country in this autumn's unprecedented invasion, I though I would try the spot where I saw a few about 25 years ago near the Haldon Butterfly Trail. I failed to find Hornbeams where I recalled them being, but fortunately 2 Hawfinches calling alerted me to the presence of a single Hornbeam down the Tree Trail. Actually, they called as they flew out of it! At least 7 Crossbills were nearer the car park, and odd Redpolls flew over on several occasions. A lovely afternoon, with 2 Southern Hawkers and a late Speckled Wood adding to the summery feel.
