Exminster Marshes

Before the rain arrived I managed a walk around the reserve. A female merlin just north of the s bend in the lane may have been the bird I saw hunting yesterday to the west of the village. The high tide roost comprised of curlew (74), golden plover (4 + 12 on another field) and a few dunlin. About 60 lapwing were well spread out over the fields as were snipe with several flocks of c10 flying around. On the pools and in the ditches there were c500 wigeon, c100 teal, c50 shoveller and 6 pintail and on the lagoon at least 6 gadwall. Over 200 brent geese flew onto the fields near Turf. I could only see 8 juveniles/first winter birds within the flock. Elsewhere 15 fieldfares, 2 redwings and  a couple of chiffchaffs on the canal bank.
