Slapton Ley

08:20-13:00. Moderate SSW veering SW, bright spells, heavy shower midday.

On arrival at Slapton Bridge nice looking dark Marsh Harrier quartering the Higher Ley. Little Grebe on the Graveyard Pool. Walked around to Southgrounds, 7 more Little Grebes ( can't recall seeing a Great Crested Grebe which is unusual ), 108 Tufted Ducks ( no Pochards ), 10 Goldeneyes ( 5 males ), 2 Mistle Thrushes, 4 Redwings, male Blackcap and 2 Firecrests. Did the Johnny Cash bit and walked the line  ( to Torcross ) but the sea was very quiet, just a distant unidentified diver heading south. At Torcross the 2 Black-necked Grebes together viewable from the tank.

Lots of birdsong, Goldeneye displaying, a Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming and even a frog croaking briefly in Ireland Bay, someone better tell them about next week !
