East Devon Branch Trip Report. Powderham to Turf Locks 10th October 2024

Rain threatened as the walk started but improved as the morning progressed. There
were 10 attendees including 2 new members and one prospective member.
We had two highlights.
One was a flock of dunlin roosting from the high tide on the estuary bank. All agreed
they had never got so close to a flock before who were completely ambivalent to our
presence; the photo was taken with my phone!
The other was found after scanning many egrets – a sole cattle egret next to the
brook just before The Turf, amongst cattle of course.
There were a few Brents on the estuary as were the well documented black swan
pair with their 5 cygnets. Otherwise the waders and water birds were disappointing
almost certainly due to the exceptionally high tide, although we did find a lone
common sandpiper, again next to The Turf.
